Is Doing Art Commissions for Gil Allowed?

Hello! I'm a returning player and it's been almost two years since I've played this game, but got into it again recently when I made a new friend who's super into it, and now I've been playing again.

I decided to leave my old character behind on the server she was from (the whole thing was just a mess) and start fresh. Only thing is I am broke and rather than earn my money the old fashioned way, I wanted to see if I could offer my artistic skills!

I've done this on other games before, as they had no issues with it so long as real currency was not involved, but what is SE's stance on it? Those games even had specific forums where the advertisement of offering artistic services was allowed, and I don't see any here. My search didn't really turn up anything, so I figured I would just ask here and see what the rules on that are (:

I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread asking the same question a while back and that the verdict was no because it could give gil an IRL value (e.g. you usually sell commissions for $30, but in game you sell them for 3mil or something like that), but I could be mistaken. Maybe someone else will drop by with a more definitive answer. (But if it is allowed, I'd totally love to do FF commissions for gil, too. xD )

My understanding is that you cannot use Real currency for in-game transactions. But I honestly don't see anything wrong w/ using Gil for Real Life transactions, as it doesn't negatively affect the gameplay, market, or otherwise affect the game, so that's a good question!


Honestly, if you did do this, I'd probably support your GIL commissions as well! So, hopefully someone can shed more light on the policy?

Mmhm, I did some more looking and I can't really find a definite answer... it's a bit confusing ): It stinks when game devs have to give vague answers, but at the same time it makes sense because they ca't be liable for it, y'know?

D'aww, thank you for your input :,3 I hope the final answer works in my favor, I'd be so happy. Tbh, I am just trying to earn enough for a pet namazu because I had that on my old character and we had so many happy memories together... *sniff* xD

I dont think the ToS says anything about it, but i'd double check. I personally see no problem with it, and i think people would happily commision you. If i were a better artist i'd think about it myself, far better than crafting for sure X) If worst comes to worst you'd *probably* just get a warning if SE doesn't want you to do it, especially if you looked in the ToS and forums for an answer. Im not sure how heavy SE is with the ban hammer.

Afaik the policies are made with the scope of forbid any real money payment for in game benefits outside the SE store. That is, only SE have the right to monetize on its products.

In your case, I see no real money involved.

Yeah, I know some games are worse with handing out bans like christmas presents than others! xD On gaia online, I've earned *trillions* by making art, hehe... same with Tera online back when I used to play, I was too lazy to play the actual game but had no problem spending hours on a single piece of art, LOL xD Thank you for your input!

Note: this is my personal opinion, not SE's official stance.

In this specific case I don't see a problem with it since each commission is unique and their value substantially comes from the work you put into them. However I wouldn't say that any transaction is okay as long as real money is not involved. If you were to obtain mass-produced items using real money and proceeded to sell them to other players for gil, you would be effectively buying gil with real money even though they don't appear in the same transaction. This could be further extended into a scheme where a gold farmer sells you some sort of out-of-game tokens for real money and then buys said tokens back using gil. I would expect game developers to be very careful about issuing official blanket statements about mixed transactions for this reason.

I don't think it's been said yet so I'll ask: have you tried filing a support ticket? At least you might get a direct answer.

EDIT: I would suggest writing "Need ToS help" in the title/subject line/header just to make sure it grabs their attention.
