On a side note, I feel like it's worth mentioning that gender (like many other things in life) is really one of those things that everybody defines slightly differently in their own heads.
Some people feel that it's an identity thing. Others feel that it's strictly tied to your DNA (which obviously can't be changed).
Honestly, the best thing here is for everybody to do what they want and not care what others think. If somebody's having a brain aneurysm because hEy! YoU'rE nOt A gIrL iRl!, then that should be a red flag anyway. Last I checked, your IRL gender doesn't affect your character stats or comprehension of game mechanics. If they realize that too, then why do they care?
People can play as whatever character they want.
Seriously, who cares? I've been everything from a catgirl to Hrothgar at some point or another. My IRL gender is irrelevant. I just play what I like.
I think most people are being pretty reasonable about it. A lot of players aren't bothered by such things so long as there's no creepiness or active deception involved - but in situations where there is, raised eyebrows are to be expected.
There's always going to be someone out there that is negative. Personally, I think that it would be dumb to get triggered over what gender a person plays. Live and let live.I play male because I consider my character an extension of myself.
Well said. That’s not correct. Anyone can do anything for any reason. Looking at slutty glamours is not a surefire way to tell the gender behind the character. Some straight women in my FC play as cat girls wearing nothing but cowboy boots, a bra, and panties because they think they’re hot. Some straight men in my FC play half-naked muscular roe boys because they think they’re awesome. One of my best friends dresses up her male miqo’te in slutty clothes because she thinks he’s hot. Does that also give you a weird vibe or is it just boys playing as girls?
Quantifying anyone’s reason for playing any character as being “bad” or “weird” just smells like people consciously or sub-consciously trying to make themselves feel like they’re better than another type of person regarding each of their choices on how to play this game. Yeah, there are tons of dudes playing female characters nearly naked because they’re attracted to women.
But I don’t think that’s any more or less valid than me, a guy not attracted to women who plays female characters because I’m super-duper into fashion and I think it’s fun to spend a lot of time making and theming new glams and getting complimented.
Or the guy who wants to play a giant woman. Or the girl who wants to play a cute potato. Or the people who make characters look like themselves in real life and play the game as them.
It’s an MMO, just let people have their own fun and don’t be weird about it.
Some people play the opposite gender for eye candy, others enjoy Roleplaying as themselves. Im a dude irl and enjoy playing dudes in games, roleplay wise. Its a nice escape from an otherwise boring and grey real life. I rarely play females, unless its games like Blood Rayne, Drakan, Tomb Raider...
