The feature is to be used when you cannot match a specific color on your gear. For example in the image below I was not able to match the shade of green on my hood with the dyes we have available. If I could color-pick that shade of green on the mantle that would solve the problem.

Ahhh that's how you meant it! Yeah it would be nice if they added that or just try and make gear take the same color. Altho i doubt they would do that seeing as character creation is already simple. Maybe if they skip new races for the next few expansions we get better customization along with a better dye system.
