There are essentially two (sort of three) systems for how trusts work.

While playing Shadowbringers MSQ, when you reach a dungeon in the course of the story, your NPC companions are automatically available to accompany you into the dungeon. Your choice is determined by which characters are actually with you at that point.

Until you reach the end of the MSQ, you have the option to replay those dungeons with trusts via a menu setting, and the same choice of characters as determined by the story.

Once you have cleared the game, the system changes. You now have a fixed set of "avatars" of the main Scions, who start at Lv71 and need to be leveled up by repeatedly running dungeons with them. You cannot choose to play a dungeon that they are not sufficiently leveled to access.

Getting these to Lv80 re-unlocks the ability to play with the story-specific group of characters ("scenario mode") and lets you pick alternate costumes - not free glamours - for the avatars.

Post-credits MSQ dungeons (but not optional dungeons) still give you a fixed group of Lv80 companions to clear the dungeon and progress the story, but you can't play again with them until you finish leveling the avatar trusts and unlock scenario mode.
