So, for the super-ultra-casual-not-going-to-raid MNK...
...when the heck do I use Six-Sided Star or Tornado Kick?

For six sided star you use it when you need to disengage a boss for 2+ GCDs (not very often), or just before long downtime, or as a execution type move at the end of a fight.
Use TK for boss jumps where you can at least get back up to GL2 and into coeurl form to start with GL3, and again also used as an execution move just before the boss dies. Also, use it if you are going to lose GL anyway (shouldn't happen outside of long cutscenes)
Sidenote for TK: the damage from the ability is applied very late. Around 1.5s after you hit the button. Therefore using TK into 6SS usually results in a weaker 6SS but guarantees enough time for TKs damage to apply to the boss incase it jumps.
Almost never.
I mean you said you're not raiding so unless it's the last kill for your quest or something, you can pretty much just leave them off your bars lmao.
I use it when I have two or more OGCDs: Either RoF + Forbidden Chakra, or Brotherhood + Elixir Field.
I know hardcore monk players don't really use it, but this is one way for me to double weave without missing a GCD.
Niche, and very situational but I can't think of any other way to use it.

when would you need to double weave outside of the opener? forcing yourself to double weave and using 6SS to do so is just straight up bad. You're making a niche ability even worse with your method.I use it when I have two or more OGCDs: Either RoF + Forbidden Chakra, or Brotherhood + Elixir Field.

Also, I'm not sure why BloodRuby is advocating just taking them off just because you don't raid. You should still learn the basics of the skill, as niche as it is. Double weaving isn't what 6SS is intended for. It's intended for disengages longer than 2 GCDs and final hits for boss jumps and TK's main use is to use it if you are going to drop GL in the upcoming phase transition, or to use as a final hit against the boss. You don't need to be a raider to practise good fundamentals for jobs. Anyone advocating anything is hurting the playerbase by preaching bad habits.
Only addendum I'd put is for TK - Only if you have a way to regain GL 2-4 before the downtime ends, since you will never drop GL unless cutscene due to Form Shift.when would you need to double weave outside of the opener? forcing yourself to double weave and using 6SS to do so is just straight up bad. I do use it the way you recommend (finisher or before disengage longer than 2GCDs) but most of the time I forget, and I still don't get punished because of it. The damage increase is just too small for me to notice without a parser.
Let me clarify why I use it to double weave:
1) I have bad ping, so even when I'm single weaving single oGCD, I will still clip through half of my GCD (at 4 GL stacks). I have the same problem with MCH.
2) I can't tell if my finisher (with or without TK) that it will kill the enemy. I'm just... bad
Thanks for the feedback thoughI'll try to be better at Monk because I love the job.
'Preaching bad habits' was more of a generalization to those that do give misinformation as opposed to being directed at you, such as the guy above advocating just taking them off his bar if he's not raiding anyway. My first line was more directed at your method of using 6SS. But if that's the reason why I could understand it a bit betterI'm not preaching anything... I'm just saying that's the way I use it...
