K'rina Sato (main): She is the daughter of a couple who is part of a mixed group of refugees who fled Doma when the Garleans destroyed their village while attempting to invade the Azime Steppe. They were, mercifully, able to get away, but there were heavy casualties regardless. The surviving two members of the Kurogane (Raen) clan that ruled their village gathered the other survivors together and helped them escape into the wider world. Getting out of Doma itself required every single trick they had, but they were able to make a deal with the Ruby Sea pirates to get to Kugane.

Once in Kugane, they took stock and while some chose to stay in more familiar surroundings, the rest rallied around their young leader who had seen them safely out of the battlefield. They re-organized themselves into a mercenary company and set out to find their fortunes and a place they could call home until Doma and its surrounding area was free once more.

This is the life K'rina was born to. She and the other children of the company (not just miqo'te, but several races) grew up traveling with the company. They saw a great many exotic places and peoples and over time a great many of the more traditional attitudes were dropped from the multi-racial clan. As a kitten, she began trying to help out almost as soon as she could toddle, and quickly proved herself a prodigy. Though not before the number of jobs for mercenary companies in general began to decline. By the time they reached Eorzea, mercenary companies were much fewer and further between. By the time she was fifteen, it was nearly impossible for them to find work. So the eclectic clan took stock again and chose to settle in Vylbrand and begin building a more permanent home.

K'rina never quite lost that wanderlust from her childhood however, and when she turned twenty, and their new little village was stable, she decided to go into Limsa Lominsa and register as an adventurer. Her family was only too happy to help prepare her and send her out. Little did they know that all too soon afterwards the moon would fall and calamity would happen.

When K'rina awoke five years later on a ship without any memory of what had happened considering she'd last been on the battlefield at Carteneau, she shamelessly wrung as much information out of the talkative peddler as she could, and once she arrived in Limsa she hastily reached out to her family in the hopes they'd been spared the tragedy. Shortly thereafter, there was a very tearful reunion between her and her parents, and she returned briefly to the village that had mercifully survived, to get caught up on everything that had happened.

She stayed there for about a month before deciding to head back into the adventuring life. She wasn't content to simply remain in one place indefinitely, and felt that in the wake of the tragedy she couldn't prevent, she owed it to the survivors to help them as much as she wanted to help her family. So back to Limsa Lominsa she went. And her path has been a long and strange one ever since.

Sonja Forsberg (alt): Sonja is a third generation Hyur/Veena mix from Dalmasca by way of Radz-at-Han who has never known true Viera culture. Her grandmother left the mountains after choosing to help a wounded Dalmascan man instead of simply killing him for his unintentional trespassing. His stories of Dalmasca and the outside world in general fascinated her, and even after he left she wished to know and see more. As much as she loved the forest and her sisters, their refusal to acknowledge the outside world and new ideas had begun to chafe badly. So she left.

After traveling to Dalmasca she met back up with the man she'd rescued, now middle-aged and with children of his own, and was was immediately welcomed as a family friend. He and his family were only too happy to introduce the awe-struck, and culture-shocked, Viera to the outside world, and she was only too happy to lend her help where she could in return for their kindness. Though it saddened her greatly to learn that her friend was so very short lived in comparison to her own people. Nevertheless, she was happy to become a member of his family, and watch over his children and grand children when he no longer could.

Though she never expected to fall in love with the youngest grandson after he left the home a boy and returned a seasoned man. Or fall in love at all really. She embraced it wholly though, despite knowing her husband would leave her all too soon, and they were happy for several decades.

Her second greatest surprise, was that their children did not come out a strange blend of the two races. Rather, their four daughters were universally entirely Viera, while their two sons were both wholly Hyur in appearance. Each possessed one or two features of the other race, but that was all. And as the years passed it became apparent that in her daughters the longevity bred true as well. Determined that her daughters would fully understand the heritage they'd been given, she gave each of them traditional Viera names and began training all of them as rigorously as if they had been raised in Forsberg.

It was a tradition that would remain as each of the daughters grew into adulthood and found their own paths.

When the youngest of the four followed her mother's footsteps and fell in love with a Hyur man, she vowed to do for her daughters what her mother had done for them, and when Sonja was born Viera and proved herself female at thirteen, she was given her new name and began her training at the hands of her grandmother, mother, and aunts. Though her hyur heritage proved to also be more pronounced given her comparatively petite stature.

Nevertheles, she embraced the traditions and training passed to her eagerly enough, though she has never been able to understand her grandmother's stories of how strict and restrictive Viera culture is. Nor it's attitudes towards men.

When the Garleans came, Sonja helped her siblings and younger cousins to escape while her mother and aunts covered their retreat. Unable to remain anywhere in the vicinity, the extended family fled to Radz-at-Han and set up a new life there. It was difficult, but her grandmother had developed a very shrewd head for business over the years, and it wasn't long before they were comfortable and prosperous again.

As she grew into her adulthood, Sonja became restless. Their new home was beautiful, but she longed to see more of the world and perhaps find a way to liberate Dalmasca in the process. However, when the calamity came, all thoughts of liberating Dalmasca were abandoned in favor of helping her family survive the aftermath. Uncertain what their prospects at large were after that, Sonja volunteered to head out into the world to find out.

She began passing herself as an adventurer, and traveled warily overseas, only to find that the lifestyle suited her so much that she didn't want to give it up. She dutifully reported everything her family wanted to know about business prospects and the state of each land she'd visited on her return, but then informed them that she wished to go back out. Not as a scout, but as a real adventurer.

She felt her skills would be better served out there, helping those not as fortunate as them, and finding ways to fight against the Garleans lest they cause another calamity in their arrogance. Thus she traveled to Eorzea and began her first steps on a path that would change her life forever.
