I realized none of the FFXIV races appeal to me, anyone else?

For some reason, I love to be a Lalafell. Zedek - Size matters est. 2010 is my kind of "brand", and you can find me as Yordle, Lalafell, Asura, former Mascu in MMORPGs. In the 90s, my father created the characters in the MS DOS-classic "Das Schwarze Auge" to match our family members, and guess what: "Tobias - Dwarf".

I like it when those small species are different and nasty though. I am really not a fan of Kawaiiiii Lolitas. As a stealth game fan, I consider the Styx series to be my favourite: I am a nasty, small killer Goblin that still manages to be lovable on his own disgusting way. The simple fact a small green skin overcomes his size problems and being a threat by being small (and thus nimble and quick) is very appealing opposed to "Hurr Durr, you must be tall to be a hero" sort of nonsense.

My favourite species will be the Asura of GW2. They are important by their technology, a silent sleeper threat to the other races like a small, poisonous flower or something. You could think the Charr would mess and deal with them easily, but they don't dare. I loved my Asura Deadeye, an intelligent sniper thief paired with the typical nasty Asura attitude.

May I introduce you Zedexx, Asura Thief and Commander?

But after a while, I realized the beauty behind the Lalafell. I absolutey dislike the lack of deeper lore and such (check the Asura pages on GW1 and GW2 and the development behind them!) and this "they are just there" sort of thing, but FFXIV has in general a big lack of background lore. Right now, it feels like I watch Barny the Dinosaur because we love each other so much despite being so incredibly different..

But then, the Lalafell - especially Plainsfolk - offer something I really enjoy. Their rough voices compared to the smooth Dunesfolk voices (I luckily picked a rough one for my Lalafell by accident), the fact we have split pupils instead of UWU KAWAIII anime and manga style solid pupils and the contrast of walking like drunk Hobbits while murdering and blasting any foe of any size that tries to cause mad beef with us makes it so secretly awesome. In that one story instance from the beginning, there is this Roegadyn and his gang trying to rob me or something (hey, that was 2013!) and my (back then) archer slowly killed him until he gave up was one of these "A-ha!" moments. Combined with Red Mage, a profession only a Japanese game designer has brought up (ya ya, I know about Battle Knights and Clerics and such sort of things, they all lack the style and noblesse of a Red Mage). I actually also like their body stature because the overknee leather boots both my RDM and SCH wear look much better in short than the stretched ones of any other species.

This in combination - Plainsfolk Lalafell + Red Mage - makes Lalafell my favourite, despite all the lackluster bits in the background. Yes, I do miss my Asura's shark teeth and claw-like hands, let alone their feet and floppy ears. But something about the Lalafell calms me down so much and makes me enjoy them more.

I personally don't have this problem, but it might help you to think outside the box a bit with how you approach character design in the game.

Part of what keeps me excited is actively looking to create particular tones and subvert expectations. Hyurs where color combinations would not be found in nature, spooky lalafells, ~kawaii desu~ male roegadyns, whole nine yards. Sometimes I'll use colors that are just-off complementary to make stuff pop. Sometimes I make weird neon raver designs. Sometimes I'll see how sin-eater or voidsent I can pull off, or I'll model off of the seasons, or any number of things. Occasionally even a subtle choice, like golden blond hair + black eyes rather than blue or green, is enough to stand out.

It sounds to me like based on what you wrote you might gravitate toward miqo'te most. If your main objection is feeling like you're a clone, I definitely recommend playing with the color palettes and using makeup to change impressions of depth/shadow on the face. Can do this around the eyes and cheeks in particular.

Another thing that can be fun--consider where you want your WoL to come from. It's possible to make an Ul'dahn Seeker of the Sun and a Gridanian Keeper of the Moon for example, but you can also experiment by switching it and speculating on how that might look visually. You can draw inspiration from all sorts of real life cultures too if you want. Also, look at cat breeds and wild cats (big and small) maybe!

There's a lot of untapped possibility. Wish you luck, really hope this helps! ^^

I feel a little bit like you, keep changing my race very often

Elezen : I have an issue with their neck :/
Roe : Badaas but everytime i try a cute glam something looks odd
Cat and snake : Army of clones

I'd say my favorit is lala cause...well masterace obviously but the thing is, I tend to feel uneased with glamour something more sexy on a lala, I get they are adults but still, they look like a 6 years old...

For now I'm a bunn, can't sa I'm reall satisfied considering the restrictions but at least it's beter than the other ones for me

I just wish SE would allow us to change skin tone, ees, ears, horns etc at the aesthician and keep Fantasi for race and gender.
This would allow us more variety in the customization, depending on how we feel at the moment but eh, $€ won't probabl accept to lose all that Fantasia mone, even if, when the Kupo wshop was created, it was to bu the long installed EU severs....

Well, considering there is a sacred rule saying we have to pat the head of every lala we meet....not sure that was the good race to "be alone" xD

I feel similarly. I usually like picking graceful/elegant looking races, which tends to be elves in most games. Elezen are way too lanky and oddly proportioned for my tastes. And I find their animations to be pretty bad as well.

I was an Au Ra for a bit but I ran into the same face/horn issue. I'm a miqo'te because I like all their animations.

If I could play an Alphinaud/Alisaie sized Elezen I definitely would. Their proportions and animations are much better imo.

When I first started my luck with XIV, my three main contenters were Au Ra, Miquo'te and Viera. Guity as charged due to their aesthetics being cute/adorable/"hawt" (for Viera xD), despite the male models looking nice enough. I was quite fond of Au ra on my first character, but with Altina, I went - for reasons outside of looks - with another race and settled on Viera. I don't know how common my chara version is and simply went with what I thought would look nice. Yet, I'm usually quite bad at character creation .

I also usually go for "Elf" races in MMOs but Elezen do not appeal to me at all.

The Elezen are wonky and Lalas have the proportions of a toddler. I don't like Hyur skintones, faces and hairstyles. Miqo'te and Au Ra are too petite and cute. That leaves me with Femroes and Vieras. Roes look beautiful but have some glamour difficulties and disproportionately flat bums. Viera have no issues with glamour but the faces look too cute and they don't have the amount of hair styles and hat options I prefer to have on female characters. Oddly, the lack of hair styles doesn't bother me on Hrothgar because the one I chose looks like a mane, but the hunched back rules out some glamours.

My ideal race would be Elezen heads on a Viera body or female Hrothgars with lots of hair styles and curvy bodies.

Miqo'te are fine. Lalafells are adorable. Roegadyn could be more orc-like maybe. And I would like to see Elezen without those laaaaarge shoulders. But overall, all races are good. Typical FF-like, how it should be.

I would like to have a bit more options. Not as much as in current MMORPGs (where you can mess around so damn much). I like the character creator here, because its not overly complex. But having more options (butt, face, etc) would be nice. Maybe having more racial features like more marks on Miqo bodies.

Au ra have an entire problem of their own with the horns not being separated from the faces and as you might guess, yes I'm one of those who suffers from their fav face being stuck to horns I don't like and vice versa

Au Ra are perfect for me. Sure, the horns may be an issue. But on the other hand: Name one playable, cute dragon-girl-race from another MMORPG. I ll wait >: D
