well its quite possible for xiv to die out, but its generally difficult to kill an mmo in a market where even bad ones can break even. If they keep at it and "relaunch" the game (New ad campaign, promotional deals, w/e) when the ps3 release comes out then they should be able to pick up subscriptions to a respectable level (if the game has actual content by that time).

This game wont die out, but Im not expecting to see any new worlds open.

Its important to remember that the game is still free to play. Im surprised more people arnt playing since this is free. I started this game at Launch with a LS of 30-40 friends who all played FFXI together. Right now Id say only about 15-20 of them are active.

Keep in mind I think a lot of them would come back if this game keeps improving. I just dont know how long they are going to wait. I feel like things are taking a long to patch up. I totally understand the current pause in progress. I and trust me, Im one of those people who is willing to wait as long as it will take. Its just that I know some of my friends arnt willing to wait as long. Thats what concerns me the most.
