I also wouldn't call it tragic, we just understand his point and why he does the "evil" things. Also we would do the same in his position.

About the only thing I find tragic about him personally is that he's very clearly tempered and even admits as such to our faces. And that in spite of apparently wanting to find 'good' in the fragmented souls that were left behind that sheer fact alone means he would ever be incapable of it. The wanting to reconcile and put down his proverbial sword but ever being incapable of realizing that his very programming is what is prohibiting him from seeing our worth and not some deficiency on our part is in itself pretty tragic. Though I think at the end as he was slowly dissolving into nothing he might have finally been able to grasp that fact; but whether or not it's because his tempering broke is uncertain. Regardless of the circumstances in that small moment he finally recognizes our worth. The worth of so many 'broken' souls to be the stewards of what is left of his original star and our worth to remember the cautionary tale and legacy his people leave behind.
In general though, Emet Selch is probably one of the best villains that SE has ever written for this series regardless of whether we personally sympathize with him or not.

Well, let's see here...
Gaius after Bahamut released got nowhere to go, basically can only rely on remaining outposts and dig out some Allagan relic to find a place for his people. We kicked his arse.
Niddhogg lose its sister Ratawhatever, and go on a rampage, we kicked his arse.
Sloppy wants liberation of Ala Mhigo, but he do it in any despicable way. We kicked his arse.
That no emotion but crazy kid just want a good friend (to fight), we kicked his arse.
That Nadesiko have a shit life and do even shit betrayal stuff, we kicked her arse.
And now we have a fella who has a race to try and restore with race supremacy issues, guess how we gotta roll?

That's just like your opinion.
All the fan girls swooning over him and people saying I have to like emet he's so great killed him for me, he reminds me of someone who'd be in one of those twlight movies that your GF or wife would make u watch with her.
He went from bad ass charasmatic founder of the garlean empire back in 4.4 and 4.5 to 5.0 twilight guy, compared to Zenos he's a bitch and the fan girls and people saying I have to like him ruined him for me, I'm hoping elidibus don't get ruined cause he's the coolest ascian imo.
Plus as far as tragic villians go I like the way they did niddhog better.

The guy just wanted his friends, family, people, world and life back.
The way he went on about it was evil and wrong. But it's just sad really.
He was nice enough to give us Y'shtola back!
(Which I've hated said poster girl until late 4.0 and she's my fave Scion now.)
So he's ok in my book lol!
But yeah, can't let you kill us all for your own reasons. :/

Personally i don't think Emet was a bad person at all. Considering if you actually read every line throughout the expansion and the way he acted and his facial expressions. Yes what he was trying to do was "Evil" but like he said before you entered the last dungeon "You would do the same" in trying to save your people. I really enjoyed Shadowbringers, it was a damn good roller coaster.

Yea, I mean, aside from all the pesky genocide of all the other shards he contributed to, and how he doesn't view anyone on The First as even actually being people, including your character, sure, I guess he's not a bad person.Personally i don't think Emet was a bad person at all. And no, I don't think the WoL and company would willingly destroy entire worlds with millions or even billions of people to "save their friends".

In the end, all he really wants is his people and civilisation back, but the methods by which he means to accomplish this makes it clear he needs to be stopped, it's hard to sympathise with him, I don't want his plans to come to fruition if it means catastrophe on a cosmic scale, but I can understand why he is the way he is. The point is that he can't let go of the past and is completely blind to the present, which is possibly due to his unending nature as an Ascian, there's no guarantee that a rejoining will prevent another calamity from happening to Amaurot again, being tempered by Zodiark also may have a hand in how he views the world as well.
I felt the pulled him off well. I think the goal was to make him sympathetic with actual motivations, but not make him or the ascians 'right.' And they struck that balance for me at least. He wasn't a 'good' person but I understood him.
