Often the word progression, when used in the context of MMORPGs, is taken to be synonymous with raiding. And raiding is a great activity.
Yet a sense of progression is what keeps many players returning to their favorite MMOs, and it can take many forms (this list is not exhaustive):
- 24 player raids (trying them for the first time, practicing doing mechanics, practicing personal bests in performance, etc.)
- 8 player normal raids (trying them for the first time, practicing doing mechanics, practicing personal bests in performance, etc.)
- 8 player savage raids (trying them for the first time, practicing doing mechanics, practicing personal bests in performance, trying for group speed and flawlessness, etc.)
- ultimate raids ((trying them for the first time, practicing doing mechanics, practicing personal bests in performance, trying for group speed and flawlessness, etc.)
- practicing/learning content or a job in a dungeon or normal trial, perhaps getting over anxiety related to group content
- leveling up a new job (combat, gathering, or crafting)
- learning a new role (tanking, healing, damage dealing)
- progressing through the MSQ
- going through all side quests in a zone
- exploring all of a zone
- getting flight in a zone
- making a particular amount of gil or MGP
- trying or improving at PvP
- keeping up with Beast Tribes/leveling reputations
- going after particular achievements in any area of the game
- earning certain mounts, pets, or glamour items
- making friends/socializing
- creating or managing events for your FC or others
- trying RP, developing your character's RP, or starting RP sessions
- etc.
Again, the list doesn't try to include all possibilities.
