Maelstrom will be the punch bag in this new mode
Mmm, I don't think so. (Primal) Mael just has recently been overwhelmed by bandwagoners who put in minimal effort and were hoping to snag "easy" wins from the overused preconception of "Mael always wins." You get enough of these people bunched on one team at a time and what you end up with is a group who can neither adapt to shifting objectives nor properly focus down the correct targets together (and hence never kill anything/feed). It was a problem plaguing Flames and it is gradually carrying over into Maelstrom as these players are all congregating from Flames onto their perceived "strongest" GC. Honestly, if you're one of these people wandering between GCs and looking for more consistent wins, you're best off joining Adders.

It really just boils down to what kind of people are queueing. But at it's worst Mael behaves exactly opposite to what you described. The only thing "hive mind" about them would be over half the team chasing the losing team to the middle of nowhere just because it's the closest thing to them. You say there's less lonewolves but it's a struggle to get people to even focus on a single objective so they end up as free points/battle high to the other teams scattered all over the map. If by "lonewolves" you meant people that know how to actually use their whole PvP kit to secure kills/stay alive, then yeah, no argument there, but again that's due to the influx of low-effort players hoping to secure wins just by being another face in the crowd.
