You're right - referencing an actual past experience is a bad idea. It would be best just to say "I like this." I think Ben Franklin should've refrained from using his experiences with the French political system. Or that Lee Iacocca shouldn't have brought his experiences from Toyota to the US auto industry.

You're being obstinate by falling back to the argument that a point of reference defaults an idea to a bad one automatically, despite the mechanics. Logically, that's just being problematic without justification.
