I didn't start leveling DoH on that character because of repair, I did it because I missed being able to craft on her to make gil.

And it doesn't actually repair to 200% durability. It adds 100% durability when you repair yourself as opposed to the mender repairing to 100% durability. If my gear is at 40% when I get around to repairing it, it will increase to 140% not 200%.

But it absolutely does reduce annoyance. You don't need to remember to visit a mender and you're not going to have the "oh crap" moment when you join a group in an instance just to notice your gear is at 15%. You can repair on the spot and not worry (again assuming you haven't run out of Dark Matter).
1). You can get Dark Matter with other currencies other than gil (though admittedly it's rather expensive to do so),
2). Adding 100% is better than repairing to 100%. Sometimes I like to repair as soon as I see green bars just so I get 190%+ so I don't have to repair again for a good long time.

And, IIRC, buying Dark Matters is cheaper than paying the mender. I could be wrong on that though, I suppose. I know that 99 Dark Matters are 19,800 gil (200 each) and I'm fairly sure that when I was forced to use a repair NPC, some of my items wanted 400+ gil to repair. That's more than double the cost.
