I don't think it is fair to fault individuals seeking larger plots because they can get them. Ultimately--SE makes the rules and players have to abide by the rules. And the rules used to be far, far worse and tilted towards individuals--when you could buy a house on every character on every account, and many were doing this specifically to flip the houses for some ungodly price. SE has taken a step to try to provide FCs an advantage with the new rules and it has definitely curbed a substantial part of the house reselling market (I know though it isn't dead).
SE has made it so that it is not easy, almost impossible, for new players seeking personal housing to get mediums / larges without first getting a small first, and to do that you have to play placard savage which is brutal. I got my small a year and a half ago playing placard savage for a junky little plot in Goblet. And it was all because someday I knew that if I wanted a medium in Shirogane, I had to get a small first. After several housing rounds where my client crashed or I got a lobby error trying to get on, I finally got it this time. To be clear, I have been preparing to buy (and failing) to get this house until today since Heavensward.
Who decides who the 'influential persons' are? The community? Popularity? The OP seems to suggest that actually certain people are due larger houses but the reason why is unclear...
Ultimately, though, SE builds the system and they built it to support personal housing. I don't know why they built it in such a way so that it directly competes with Free Company housing. I have felt that was a mistake since the day they brought in personal housing. But you really can't fault people for playing by the rules. Honestly, I'm not sure why they haven't made new types of wards where there are just more mediums/larges and less smalls since that is what people clearly want more of.
I couldn't care less if a large house is given to an FC or a private individual. What really grinds my gear are the sheer amount of large houses that have on FC chest, three NPCs and a summoner bell and are empty.
Most privates who grab a large actually decorate it while most FCs I know who grabbed a large, put in three chairs, some NPCs and leave it be. I rather have large seeing in the hands of an individual who cares than an FC who just takes it because "larges should be for FCs".
I owned a large for quite some time for my personal use, decorated it and rearranged events around it. I eventually moved back to a medium plot because I felt like it has a better items / size ratio.
I know people who own larges as private and they are doing a great job with decorating and are really enjoying the place given.
"Pray return to the workshop room."
Not only that but since the amount of large houses is really small, there might have still been a big chance that the FC would not have gotten it and instead of losing out to a personal player they would have lost it to another FC...then probably go around, look at the amount of people in that FC and complain that they are smaller thus have no rights for those large ones.
As long as there are more FCs than plots and more people than plots you will always have those that lose. And I fully understand that this is horrible and frustating. But SE at least changed it so that next to relocation FC can at least have the first chance at housing, even if its mostly just small houses. But at least you got one. Until Se finally understands that their system is just bad, especially with more and more people playing the game, you will always have those that will lose. Just dont try to put the blame on the players..we did not create this system..and if those that buy it at least use them then that should be in their rights...be angry at SE for giving us such a horrible system that would still be horrible if its FC only..also be angry at those people that buy whole wards of housing..not at one player owning one plot.
(Also on Moogle when I looked at the Mist district, most of the large ones went to FCs)
All i have to say is ask developers to change the housing problem to be a private instance. Like have an fc travel to their own FC large house and chill and do what not. Many and i mean many players don't care to see their neighbor. just have 3 NPC's out to buy a small or medium or large for whatever they want in what ever nation they chose to be. No more competing whit getting a house or camping hours and lose sleep for a house. It's ridiculous and not fun, a complete waste of in game time content.
TBH we have instanced housing currently. It's called an Apartment. The house interiors are technically instances as well. So screaming "Instanced housing fix all problems" doesnt really amount to anything. Rebuilding housing so that you have a house in your own little island world would require a considerable amount of resources I feel would be better spent elsewhere on the game itself. Not to mention doing so would then start complaints that people have to go into the instance to see it so it makes it too hard to show off your house.
I feel like part of the complaint is people feel entitled to getting larger plots. They aren't satisfied with the small ones. I looked around housing after the update and there were small plots available everywhere on Ultros.
IMO one of the things I feel contributing to the issue is the prices on the plots are outdated. Back when housing was introduced it took considerable effort to get the gil needed to buy a plot. Especially the large ones. Now however getting the gil for a small is trivial for an individual at best and the larger ones aren't that much harder unless you have poor finance management skills.
A random idea that crossed my mind earlier more out of humor was gated wards. Say have a ward that had nothing but large plots. However those plots had a price tag of say 1 billion Gil minumum because it is the gated rich people community.
In the end a majority of the complainers I see about housing to me feel like they're trying to shift blame for them not having the house or plot they wanted either through bad luck or because its a result of their own lack of effort. And the whole argument of your FC "deserving" the large plot more than an individual comes off as saying your social group deserves that mansion in Beverly Hills more than that single millionare who only spends about 2 months of the year in it because he travels around the world all the time on business.
I'd also joked around saying they should add housing to Ishgard and change it up a bit to be a craftsmen centered housing area where players actually have to build their home instead of being able to just buy stuff to put on the land. Which I'm sure would create lots of complaints as well but at this point it seems people are going to cry and complain about anything so lets go ahead and just make a new ocean with all the tears.
Ah another I own a FC and am entitled post. Individuals have the same right to a property then your fc you can do everything you need with a small deal with it and compete with everyone else like we all have to do.
To reply to the part in bold. Having recently relocated form my small private house to a large mansion, I can say it is most definitely not a monument to my vanity! An FC can have multiple people scouting for houses at all hours, I was looking around at regular intervals myself for the plots. Not only that my FC members helped me get my 2nd small plot in shirogane since I was 700k short, then my move to this newest plot is ALSO only made possible because my FC helped me fund it. I didn't grind myself to death or play the market, no issue with doing it tho! It does make me some money! If my large house is anything it is a monument to how freakin' great my FC members are to have helped me so much! I am so very happy because of their help. Now I'm excitedly leveling my gatherer's and crafters to fill this thing with furniture!
FC's shouldn't have any priority over anyone. A small might feel cramped for an fc with a LOT of active members but you, unlike me, have more people awake and online more of the time to check wards for these houses. Jus advocate for instanced housing so MORE people can have access instead of trying to disparage people and take things away from them![]()
I read this thread often and feel for those looking to get their dream homes but maybe my experience can help give some context as to why everyone deserves a shot at whatever plot they want. I am on Adamantoise: a sleepier server then most.
I have been playing since 2.3 (2014). I was poor and couldn't afford housing at the time. Around 3.1 I saved enough to buy my first small. It was one of the most unpopular smalls in the Goblet but I was so excited! Decorating the space remains one of my favorite things to do but I quickly realized I would need to craft in order to avoid the high pricing on the market board for furnishings. I then get to work leveling all crafters to 60. I long and arduous process in 3.1. But the excitement of crafting my own furniture enhanced my housing experience even more! I fell in love with the crafting and home owning. The hard work and long (and I do mean long) hours of crafting/gathering/leveling in 2015 seemed a worthwhile trade off for the experience of owning and decorating my own home in FF XIV.
Then, I had to unsub for a period and lost my gil, my house and all of my furnishings to the first round of auto demo and my failure to access the housing retainer in the Goblet within the time limit. I was heartbroken. All my hard work; lost. I even reached out to a GM to help recoup my lost funds and learned quickly that this is one of those things that I was not going to get recouped (money/home/furnishings). I did continue to work, craft and make money off of the more difficult crafts of 3.3 - 3.5 while hawking the residential areas for my next shot at a small. This is also around the time when I brought some buddies over from Destiny 1 and started our FC.
For months I searched for a home with no opening in sight when finally, a small in the goblet opened and I bought it for my FC, not myself. I was happy that I found a spot for me to enjoy and my buddies too! I still kept an eye out for my own place during this time, diligently hawking every ward for a place.
Around 3.4, I my hawking, crafting and luck paid off and I found a small in the mist: the equivalent to Shirogane at the time. So now I had both an FC house and a private home that I earned by hard work, research and preparation. I continued to craft and made lots of money from the hours and hours of crafting I did with a good friend. I was able to swap upgrade both FC and Private to Houses during this time; a time when relocation wasn't an option.
A Time Pre Relocation: The process of upgrading homes at this time was insane! you had to be lucky enough to find the plot you want, then port to your house and decide (in seconds) if it was worth pulling apart the masterpiece layout you spent months working on and REMOVE EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE from both in and outside, DEMOLISH your own home and pray to Minfilia that you got to the new plot before someone else bought it (and your old plot) in the process. It was anxiety producing! I followed this process a few times until I had a beachfront medium in Mist and A Medium in the Goblet. I stayed here until the new housing opened in 4.2. Keep in mind this spans the time of about 4 years since I began my housing game in FF14.
How I got my first Large in 4.2: Four years of housing knowledge afforded me and one of my friends a few things: we knew the best plots, we knew the competition on our server (which we never left because its our home) and we knew to mitigate our expectations upon release. We plotted a course to our plots and had a plan in place for the morning of release. The moment of getting our large plots was the culmination of YEARS of work ,HUNDREDS of hours of gameplay, preparation, crafting and getting to know the Adamantoise community by two people who love the housing system and the elements of the game it enhances. Our first larges were dreams fulfilled from 2014 when it was impossible to get a Large for us too. The OP is correct in thinking these are trophies: they are trophies: to the hard work we put into gameplay we love.
So the reason for this long post is to share that, as a person who now owns two Larges (one for my FC and one Private), it is not something that was in anyway easy to accomplish. It required a dedication to the game that goes beyond a collection of long, intense hours of placard spamming experienced by newer house hunters : It required YEARS of patience and realistic expectations. While I do not enjoy that the current system upsets so many people I know it would be a travesty to ignore the players who have put an effort into home owner ship simply because it suits those joining the housing game post 2016.
I should point out: I know there are others far smarter and better at this game than I am who can suggest far easier paths to large homes :-) so this post is not written as a guide or a suggestion on how to get your homes. I wrote this to illustrate the path I took; one that I have enjoyed immensely.
That being said: This system isn't broken. It is designed to be a long process and I must say, if it weren't for this long process, I would not have met the some of my friends and never would have the made all those memories of crafting and hunting and all night hangouts on Mumble and Teamspeak. Those were great times! I wouldn't have been introduced to crafting and fallen in love with that too. As much as it pains me to see people upset, I appreciate this system and all of the amazing trumps and experiences it has afforded me in the process.
So I do not agree that Larges, or any other sized plot, should be limited to anyone. Everyone who wants one, regardless of playtime or sub time should have access to these plots. Just be aware that the people who have put in the time to learn how to navigate and benefit from these systems are the ones who are going to get them first.
