    Purchasing Greenwrath

During the main scenario quest "Whispers in the wood", Bowlord Lewin has the following to say.

Lewin: The man is forestborn, but was exiled from Gridania years ago. Suffice it to say, he erred in the past, and bought the greenwrath for it.
Confusing brought with bought is a common mistake in English, especially spoken English in the UK and those colonies that attempted to emulate it closer than others (eg: Australia, New Zealand).

Gridanians will often speak of "bringing down the greenwrath", implying that one person bringing down the hedge imperils others as they can then be seen to be bringing their Greenwrath to Gridania. Thus, I believe the term in this case should be "and brought the greenwrath for it."

While buying your punishment with your crimes is certainly a concept in and of itself, one employed by Robert A. Heinlein in his own works, such a term employs commerce in its concepts and thus within an Eorzean setting would probably only be seen around Ul'dah, not the more socialistically inclined Gridania.

Well, it could be used in a similar vein as "paying for your crimes". A monetary example used by all varieties of people, not just those predisposed to commerce. Though, you're right that brought would likely make as much, if not more, sense.

This usage of bought isn't the result of confusion with brought, but rather a bit of an archaism, albeit a relatively rare one. A couple of thorough searches should be able to turn up some examples, though I am not at liberty to share them here.
