Do I really have to miss out on such a great story-driven game?

I hate dungeons! They stress me out very very much. I've tried as WHM, SCH/SUM and BARD. I suspect I will never enjoy them and I'm getting so stressed when the storyline needs a dungeon. I have managed to get myself to level 53 and it's been a mix of joy and horror. I really am struggling. Do I really have to miss out on such a great story-driven game just for hating dungeons so much? I love all the pve outside dungeons and even manage the duty instances fairly well now. I love gathering and crafting. I love exploring and having a quest show me a gem I had no clue was there when I explored an area originally. I LOVE this game... all apart from dungeons!!!

Why are they stressful? The vast majority of them are pretty much faceroll, and DPS is the most stress free class in normal content. What's causing you stress?

Ask your FC to get you past those hurdles you hate. I know a couple of players in my FC feel the same when it comes to dungeons and forced participation of those dungeons in order to get certain aspects of the game unlocked that they enjoy far more.

With friends at your side, all you would need most times is to stroll along side them in a dungeon to get the clear. Afterwards you can sit back and enjoy the story afterwards.

Well, SE has been prototyping allowing dungeons to be completed with NPCs through some different systems... most recently "trusts". It's very possible there may come a time where no dungeon needs other players to be completed.

I struggle really badly with remembering things so I stopped playing WHM as I would forget all but the most basic skills. I also forget the mechanics. I forget what I need to do or where I need to be or if I do remember I completely mistime it. For duty instances this can mean repeating it 4 or 5 times before I get through but that only affects me and I can cope. In dungeons it affects others so I feel really bad about messing up and I'm unable to improve. So then I feel really guilty and stressed, which carries forward to the next dungeon and the one after etc etc. I'm not young, I don't have quick reflexes and my memory is horrifyingly bad (which also scares me as my mother had altzeimers dementia for years before she passed, and I worry I may be developing the same). So yeah, stress mega.

I have tried, but I just feel so guilty when I mess up and ruin a dungeon for others. I end up feeling so bad about that I leave the FC. I have lost count now of the number of FC's I've joined and left for that reason.

I heard of that but you do need to be pretty high and I hadn't been concentrating on so I'm still a private. So that's not going to be an option for a long while.

Forgot to thank you all for replying! I really wish there was an option to bypass the dungeons. Force me to do 10 quests instead of each dungeon and I will happily do so, even 20 quests. I love doing quests. I would happily do every single side quest in the game if it gave me to option to skip dungeons. I even considered buying the MSQ skip but it does not give you all the story in cutscenes to watch, only some bits.

At the end of ARR, between that and truly starting HW, which is where I am now, the dungeon mechanics are ramping up and I cannot remember them and it scares me and stresses me out.

Well - there is also the option to do dungeons with your current level and not the level that the game suggests.
e.g. you could ask friends to help you with their level 80 characters.
Then you would only go next to them and enjoy the dungeon while they do the work.

They also get bonus if they help you to finish the dungeon the first time - therefor no reason to feel bad.
