FFXIV didn't set the bar and not because it was different from FFXI or WOW, but because it had/had so many bugs or issues that have already been solved by other MMO's before it and also because it missing so much content that is now seen as very basic for a modern MMO.

The comparison to other games is more about how strange it is to see SE stumble a step or two backwards from what is expected from them instead of the leap forward we are so used to enjoying.
