That's the general rule of thumb for any game you haven't beaten yet really, especially one that's been out for a few months in the case of the recent expansion and years in the case of the rest of the game. I am sorry you were spoiled however.
Hmmm tough one. Back when Shb was new people were conscious of spoilers and just put the Shb logo on the thumbnail, one of the people who upload music even called it "Final zone of the final area theme" but yea, now we are 2/3 months into Shb there is plenty of videos with people doing the boss fight in the background or clips of the "big reveal" moment at the end. I guess if you really care about spoilers you should probably refrain from looking up anything FFxiv related on youtube as it will throw you a Shb spoiler vid at some point even if all you've watched is ARR content.
It'll be a long slog but if youre going to swim in the sea don't complain when you get stung by a jellyfish.
Although there are some that can be out of context. I remember when I was playing through the game after beginning around 4.1. I had to do the above but still managed to find Alexander theme before I got there and kept wondering where I would fight Alexander in the MSQ....well you don't but I didn't know that from the Locus music.
Likewise, I seen Larrys video on Raubhan Ex long before I'd got to that point. So playing through the MSQ I kept thinking Raubhan was going to turn on us and we would fight him. I was hella confused when I caught up around 4.3ish and I'd never encountered this "Raubhan ex" fight. xD
So yea some might spoil, some might confuse. it is what it is and that's what happens when you browse youtube related content or leave autoplay on.
If you care about having a 100% untainted experience you should avoid pretty much everything, even discussing parts of the story you're at, the potential of accidental spoiler is very high even reading these forums or reddit. All it takes is one person to forget to spoiler tag things and you're out.
Also avoid reading patch notes and patch preview sites because those assume you have done the MSQ up to that point. Like the newest 5.1 patch preview is a major spoiler of 5.0.
SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!
Welcome to the internet. Stay away unless you want to be spoiled on stuff.
Even the 5.1 promo site contains the spoiler you are referring to. The general consensus is that the spoiler embargo is lifted. While I will stand by the fact that its on the player to avoid spoilers, and its common sense that spoilers will be unfiltered wherever you go, your PSA is nice.
A big problem is SE will take down any music from youtube unless it includes gameplay so people will upload the OSTs with relevant footage.
