Having trouble targeting While with groups

Hi so just recently got into FF14 and it is the first mmo that I really got invested into and as such I cant target all that good while I'm with a group of people as i keep clicking on player chars on accident rather than the enemy so i stand there for a good few secs before actually attacking. Is there any way to improve my targeting?

if you MUST use a mouse, filter out players from being target options. (hide names/HP bars) You can click on enemy hp bars, which can make it easier too.
also, u can target a PT members target, by clicking on the HP bars in the Target of target.

Clicking their name in the enmity list works too. Biggest downside there is it's not always obvious which one is which, so you might be targeting one that's out of range, but it can still be useful at times.

I would get used to using tab and shift+tab.

Apart from the suggestion above, there are mouse wheel settings in the character config > Control > Mouse
While scrolling the wheel zooms camera by default, you can assign scroll up/down + alt/shift/ctrl to cycle between enemies or party members. This works comfortably for me as a quick way to tag mobs during pulls. When switching targets, I click on enmity list or use the mouse wheel depending on situation.

On another note, are there any tips for magic users on controllers? My husband was leveling his thaumaturge as his first class and said the targeting system for the console/controller was a bit difficult to use. Is there some setting for controllers that helps with targeting just the enemies, or to help cycle through to a certain enemy besides soft targeting and then selecting it as the main target? I did watch him play and it seemed to me he was only soft targeting another enemy though and got frustrated when it switched back to his main target. *shrugs* But still, any tips or advice would to welcome!

As a controller user, I find making a macro to assist the tank ( /assist <2>) or the dps ( /assist <4>) and assigning it to L3 or R3 helps a lot while in a group. A great resource I found was the Work to Game controller guides on youtube.
