It makes sense to me to have to fill in the area. Think about it for a sec from in game perspective. We are supposed to have a mass catastrophe. This means with the destruction, also new land will appear such as islands, mountains, gorges, etc. This has the potential to be used as quests towards GCs or nations or whatever as they ask adventurer's to rediscover the world as is then. Maybe the aetherytes (sp?) might get damaged to the point we are limited to use of only certain ones, which would limit teleport travel in the future making us have to travel more on foot and rely less on crystals. We could have the current which will then be the old map to base our knowledge of the world to travel but as we continue, our maps update. They can even make it to the point that use of airships are limited due to all the havoc, that they wont just as easily use them to rediscover the world. For all we know, garleans take over the sky and keep shooting down airships lol.
I mean, there is a lot of potential with the storyline and rediscovery. Yes we all know ppl will probably google sites for the maps, but can't deny exploring would be fun when our world is really not that big in game. Some of us like to explore, while others dont. Those who dont can just as easily google a map.
To be handed a map after a meteor or Dalamud destroys Eorzea would be very stupid. I'm all for fill in maps, or even quested maps that require traveling throughout the area to key points or something.

I'm the Princess of the Night~~
Guys,
I don;t disagree on any particular point....
I am just saying ....if the map isn't complete, the first "internet guy" to complete it is gonna post a .jpeg of it, and that's it.....
Me and EVERY gamer I know is gonna head strait over there and download every map he's got.
I know this for a fact due to the popularity of any map site on any game that doesn't just "hand you the maps"
So it's just a silly exercise in futility that creates annoyance and tedium.
"looking at a map" drawn in fantasy rendition, and "exploring an area" are not the same thing.
For instance. In Beta we had the map of La Noscea up for the first time. The group i was with was like ..
"ooooooo look "Iron Lake, lets go check that out!"
then
"Wow Mistbeard Cove what's in there?!"
We are basically tourists ..... having the maps already just makes more sense from a gameplay perspective.
Though yeah I totally agree that if a meteor destroyed the planet it would make little sense to already have a map....but damn , after a week or so don't you think the amry/scientists/traders are gonna have maps of the surrounding area you can get to on foot from the main cities?
The Airship guys are gonna quickly make charts etc.... disperse them to the adventurers guild, and bingo bango bongo....the maps are up to date....
Till then I'd just ask the local catuars where to go.....
How is it tedious? You would be heading to those areas anyway...Guys,

Having the map already in game or looking at it on a website are essentially the exact same thing... one way doesn't seem any more or less tedious...
If you're heading to a location... the map fills as you go... No extra work is necessary and it takes the same amount of time to get there...
Its all a matter of opinion... some would say a video game is a silly exercise in futility...
and to an extent, they'd be right
That's exactly my point man lol.How is it tedious? You would be heading to those areas anyway...

It IS the exact same thing....thanks for understanding how useless an exercise it is to hide the map.
It's just a game, its all just for fun, it's all just to waste time, so why not just add the map already? What does it matter? If you uncover your map is Ed McMan gonna come give you a prize....no....no man he's not, no one cares, no one in RL cares that you OVERCAME that inconvenience....
In response to your query it's Tedious BECAUSE you have to either go Google the map, run dual screens (which I do for that exact purpose) or alt tab all the time. etc and so on and so fourth.
I get where you guys are coming from I REALLY REALLY do, it's fun to uncover and discover things. But I guess we are just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.

well the point was everything we do in a game is silly and futile...That's exactly my point man lol.

and you'd only need to look at a map the first time you go some place...
How much extra time are you really wasting? Seriously... 5 seconds looking at a google map is tedious?
If efficient use of your time is really important... maybe MMO gaming isn't for you...
By that right, leveling up is tedious... opening cutscenes are tedious...
Hell, the login screen is tedious...
the point is, if there are a large number of people who would enjoy it... it might just end up being something you'll have to suck it up and deal with...
Even if I didn't enjoy it, I just don't see it being that big of a hindrance that I would be opposed to them adding it...
In the end it's just not that serious
So...who cares?
Some people like the accomplishment of having the map fully unlocked and not needing to pop over to XIVAtlas or whatever whenever they need to find something.
Now you are just Being an J$rk "Maybe gaming isn't for you" blah blah....
You dont gontta go there man, I been playin mmos since before they had graphics dude:
"You get the Flask" "You cannot go north" lol
I just think a game should have more meat and less potatoes is all, and yeah I DO think a game developer should think about the 5 seconds I am gonna have to spend to correct his dumb idea.
But you are right, if more ppl get some kinda kick from the "revealed map" feature no worries man, I'll just download the map and drop em in my .dat files, like everyone else who don't want to deal with it.
Honestly I really had no idea so many ppl were so passionate about this simple feature.
