I imagine a handful of cartographers would become quite famous.

Maybe even letting the players "name" the landmarks and camps they find based on the map. Let those names perpetuate throughout the server in one language or another. (maybe not in FFXIV, but in some future MMO).

That would be cool if they add new zones that are inhabited and we have to explore them from zero.

for quest i prefer having a wider area marked so u dont know exactly where the quest location is, so you need to look around a bit but not that much

They should add in a cartography job to the DOL. Have to go out and explore to create maps. This job could also locate rare mining/BOT points that have higher drop rate and such. Then with paper and pen create these maps to sell to other people. Also the ability to create Treasure maps for adventurers to go out and locate...

Maps are a bad thing in MMOs. They shrink the world, killing exploration tremendously. Everquest didn't have any maps at all until like five years into its lifespan, and though the actual in-game world was pretty small, it seemed HUGE. And not only that, but you navigated by landmarks, instead of following the arrow on your map/minimap. If I were ever going to make a video game, especially an MMO, there would be NO maps. Or at the very least, you'd have a map, but there would certainly not be an arrow or dot to show where you are.

I'd be okay with uncovering maps if after certain % you get the full map. Having a poorly traced map would piss me off.

I used to really love questing for maps on XI.

Eh i like having my maps its pretty dumb for a populated world that travels and one that has airships, not to have a map of the place already made.
