PG&E Planned Power Outage in Sacramento

PG&E is doing a planned power outage for most the North State of California which will be implemented 4 am PST 10/9/2019, including the Sacramento area. Has there been any mention that this may affect the FFXIV servers in Sacramento? Possibly major networking hubs in the surrounding area of the servers losing power attributing to players unable to connect to the servers?

I can’t get the site to load either—apparently it’s being overrun by people who may have concerns about this. I’d think if it was going to affect the servers, we would have heard something by now?

PG&E's site isn't https complaint on top of all their other issues, but I digress. The website is barely working because the whole state is trying to figure out if they're in a power outage zone. It's all very vague. From what I've read it's supposed to start at 4am PST and some areas may experience power outages of up to 5 days. I doubt Sacramento would be in a 5 day area, and they might not even have an outage, but the surrounding areas may, which could cause issues with network routing if anything is going through an area with no power. Since PG&E isn't giving solid answers about who will absolutely be affected I'm not surprised that FFXIV hasn't said anything at the risk that customers might avoid the game thinking a service outage was planned when it hasn't happened.

These generators are widely used across North America. Regular citizens, hospitals, factories, governmental buildings, military installations and data centers use them regularly. I happen to do fire suppression maintenance/inspections and I have yet to see any buildings you expect to be autonomous without some sort of backup power solution.

Pretty much this.

Whether its diesel or something else, pretty much every datacenter in NA has power redundancy and backup solutions to keep their datacenter running for hours or days if power is lost, considering their business NEEDS to have their systems running to make profit. Power redundancy is something they hit you over the head with constantly in Network engineering courses, or so my BF's told me of his experiences.

I think a server farm would require more energy than diesel generators could reasonably supply. And yeah Air quality stuff. But again, running the servers is moot if the surrounding areas are without power. Which is what I was getting at. If an internet exchange point is down because of the outage it could affect multiple users.

Reading up on the news about this, and it seems like the power outage is happening due to the windy, dry weather in the area—and PG&E is wanting to try and prevent wildfires. Apparently their equipment was responsible for one two years ago, and then another a year ago. So, I don’t really think even diesel generators would be an option if this is their intent.
