Genuine question for those upset with the new Mentor requirements

This is gonna sound controversial but it's something I believe does need asking.

Why do you need a crown symbol to help people?

I can only really speak for Cerberus, but I know from friends on other servers that the Novice Networks tend to be full of people who really shouldn't be there at all. From those using it as their own personal elitist linkshell, to those who - quite frankly - have such a loose grasp on the game that their advice is just plain wrong.

Mentors kicking other mentors for disagreeing with them, or kicking someone for being toxic and then getting kicked by the toxic persons friend. The Novice Networks are a mess, and I can count on one hand the number of crown-wearing mentors on Cerberus that are actually worthy of the title.

The truth is, the crown is nothing more than a status symbol, and one that has been incredibly easy to obtain in the past. I've been playing since 2.0 launch and even though I make the cut for the new requirements, I personally know players who started mid-HW and have far more comms than I do - and I main WHM.

I've met the requirements for Mentor since the day they were introduced, and I meet the new ones too, but I never wear the crown. Instead, I ask if anyone needs any tips when I see a "One or more are new to this dungeon" notification, when tanking I ask if healers are comfortable with big pulls, and when healing I'll let the tank know I like big pulls (and I cannot lie), and in doing this I end up getting comms even as a DPS. Because I don't need a crown to be a mentor.

So let's be honest with ourselves here. This was never about helping people. It was about feeling superior.

I genuinely hope these requirements weed out those Mentors who don't deserve the title, and allows those who do the chance to make the Novice Network the place it was meant to be - a one-stop shop for help and advice for new players.

    Cue the hate.
