In fairness, I'd sorta be in agreement on the story assessment. It's one of the reasons I've never really understood the complaints against the 2.x quests. Sure, there's a lot of fetching and back and forth. But, to me, that just sorta sums up every quest everywhere in every expansion. Go there, talk, go there, talk, go there, kill the thing, talk, go there, grab the thing, talk. Stripped down to bare basics, it's not always entirely engaging. But, same can be said for nearly everything, I'm sure.
But, this isn't to say I really dislike any of it. More like, I understand that just seems like the expectation for MMO quests. Some of it will inevitably feel like busywork. Cuz yeah, devs want to keep you busy and subbed. And, to some extent, is just the limitations of the system/mechanics. You could probably strip down any old FF game to a similar series of actions. It just seems more apparent with the quest system in the MMO setting.
Idk. Story is a bit of a contentious point, I guess. I can see where most complaints are coming from. Much as I want to get into it, I honestly kinda just don't super care. I try, but sometimes the tedium digs too deep. Might also blame the "blank slate" aspect of our main character. I'd rather project an idea of stoicism and disinterest in my character that simply doesn't work with the scripting necessary to drive the story, so, kinda takes me out of it.
All that said, I can still appreciate and respect the work that goes into it, and even if I'm not super gripped by the plot, I can at least enjoy it for what it is.
