I'd be up for that. I'm sure there are restrictions they could add to it that would prevent bots getting in. Better a restricted general chat than no chat at all.

I don't enjoy the shout chat in Uldah at anytime of the day. A general chat or global chat would just make it to where I would see it all the time since I know for a fact it will all move there.
Because people crave attention in the worst possible ways.
You mean like a global chat channel? Sure, I'd be for that. There's a risk of rmt spam, so maybe it should be restricted to level 80 or something. idk That, or there can be a chat restriction that only let's people post every 20-30 seconds, but that might get kind of annoying.
For people who don't want to see global chat, they can have the option to turn it off.

Back in RIFT we also had this 'level' chat system.
So IIRC it was per 10 lvls. 1-10 / 11-20 etc all the way to lvl 41-49 and then lvl 50. Everybody with the correct level was grouped in those chats and you could talk in that chat no matter what zone you were in.
I would love to have a 'general' and/or to have like the 'level' chat we had in RIFT.
Currently I'm in 3 hunt LS and 1 cross world LS which is for the static I am in. And the FC I'm in (FC chat). I have a handfull of people on my FL but 99% of the times I cannot talk with them because either they or I am in a duty and thus locked out of talking.
So, I do not really talk much with people or have the chance to do so. As a result I also don't really have much people I meet or friends with.
Compared to RIFT (vanilla rift played for about 3 years since launch), Guild Wars 2 (about 2 years) and overal much less time spend in those game but I had much more people I talked with and connections. And now that I think back about it that was mainly due to being able to talk with just about anybody in general and level chats and such.
In this game I'm sitting at 4.5K hours in 5 years and a half and just handfull of people on all those years.
I'm hoping fellowships might maybe increase my 'social' stuff in this game but I'm kind of sceptical since all chats and social improvements made over the years haven't really done that much to help.
But so yes I would really love this.
Edit: for the RMT and spamming, that will be an issue but I would love to have other QOL improvements such as, auto remove of "unable to find" names on our black list (bots we will blacklist but those characters get removed sometimes on daily basis) yet it still shows up on our blacklist as that, A right click drop menu when you right click a name with report for spam (and have that name also automatically added to your blacklist).

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

A good idea. NN is typically used as general chat these days, and shout channel to a lesser extent, however a channel dedicated to everyday chat and discussion would be welcomed. Obviously there are some downsides to allowing public chat, but I think the advantages outweigh that significantly.
I made a thread for a request here:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-Regional-Chat
A thread that should be easy to translate, and hopefully can be noticed by mods to bring up higher and higher to the devs.
If a solution to the bot spam is found i really dont see any reason to not add a global chat.
Those with paper-thin feelings that find everything "toxic" and spend more time reporting than playing can just turn it off.
From what I can tell so far they go out of their way and turn the profanity filter off to have more stuff to make a fuss about. Your assumption that they would make use options to simply not see things they dislike is false. Just knowing that these things exists is what upsets them.

You realize the shout bots are only active for a few minutes before logging out, deleting, and recreating right?
They dont delete characters either when they get banned, so your list is full of bots that haven't been used in months or longer.
My blacklist is completely empty of rmt, and I rarely see it except around the aetheryte in limsa. They mostly only use say now too.
Giving them access to a world chat tho? Terrible idea.

I've never been on the NN but once you grow past it, why not make yourself a linkshell? I made one to help new people and have made a lot of friends that way. I would be against world chat unless I could turn it off. I often turn off shout especially when doing something that others have finished such as events, because people just can't (won't) keep spoilers to themselves. There is also Yell, which I think goes farther than shout? I really don't know as no one uses it on Leviathan. Linkshells reach everywhere without annoying those who aren't interested, so I'd say that's the best way to go.
