Don't worry about the individual symbols, just look at the colours.
Blue = tank
Green = healer
Red = DPS

I would like to be able to commend more than 1 player in my group.
There are times where 2 players in the group perform well enough that its hard to pick between them and it would be great to be able to commend both of them with some kind of box that lets you select multiple players to commend.
Ditto on being able to commend player even if they left while you were watching final cut scenes.
The way people seem to decide who to give it to is definitely flawed. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I mean. I get a lot of commendations no matter what role I am, and I know it's not 'cause I'm good. My name usually just sticks out on the list between John Lorefriendlykeysmashlastname and Definitelynot'cloud Strife.
I'll much more readily commend a good DPS over a good tank/healer because they seem to be rarer and DPS in general tend to get less commends even if the healer/tank are subpar.

To add on to commendations, I think the player who receives the most commendations should receive a gold star. Enough gold stars and you unlock a special item. Like a , “Good Noodle,” tag.

I already find macros with stuff like "commend me please!" to be very annoying, and if the above is introduced to the game I suspect they would become very popular.Have players who wish to become a mentor register with the Smith after reaching level 80 on one of the required battle jobs. At the end of an instanced duty, a second notice could appear in any groups with a mentor or mentor applicant present asking players if they feel the mentor/mentor applicant performed as a mentor should.
Let people commend whoever they want without the game endorsing anyone in any way. Someone should stand out because you noticed something noteworthy, not because the game pointed something out for you.
Never. We don't go into instances to score and evaluate our peers. The commendation system works well because of this. It's meant to be used as a quick "Thanks!" or "You're awesome!", not as a grading tool.

+1. I think this is the reason why a lot of people complain, they mistook what the tool is for. It's supposed to be a "feel good" tool, rather to judge others. I always comm after a run unless the whole group has to be really really really shit, or was a side show of drama and bickering. While I do give out comm based on performance, most of the time there will be at least ONE person I can give the comm to.
Do you feel at least a tinny little bit of happiness when you receive a comm, or 2, or 3? My reason to always give out a comm because simply hey - this can at least make one person just a little happier for a moment, why not?

What I'd like to see is reasons why you give a commendation.
