Only if you dont ever interact in dungeons. But idk why youa would assume you would get a commendation for silently doing nothing special in dungeons.
Plenty of female characters also dont get commendations, so idk what the point of that innocuous comment was.
I almost exceed 3k comm and have not used the crown cuse its emberrasing and im bad at helping people!!!
I dont even know why mentor is still a thing.. we did fine without it honestly. The chat overall has a one troll who starts talking about pizza and if u somehow disagree he goes rampage.

Maybe not on your data center but I've gotten full comms for being a female roe in a cute glam and a healer. I dont talk, I have "Of the Holy Body" on while in a skimpy glam. I have done nothing special at all.
I dunno if its relevant to the thread, but I never even wear my mentor crown or participate in the novice network after I noticed it was essentially a chat channel for 'Mentors' to cause drama in, kick people out for superfluous reasons, and not actually help anyone. I got it originally for the sake of helping people, but like the thread starter said, you can still do that without it.

(Former) Mentor here. I can only speak for myself.
I never understood the mentor hate before. I rarely ever saw a genuinely bad mentor in actual gameplay (let's not get into Novice Network, that's whole other can of worms). I myself have had the crown off and on at various times, and never once was I given crap like "lol burger king crown" or anything of the like; though obviously I can't tell what people silently think but do not speak aloud. I'm not going to sit here and tell you all I was the best mentor, but I genuinely like to help people, and there are others out there who do feel the same.
It wasn't until the new requirements that I really understood the stigma. I've now seen how many people feel like they DESERVE commendations. That it is somehow their RIGHT.
For...what, exactly? Why do you want it so bad? You do not need the symbol to help people. You do not need it to make yourself approachable to help.
The mount isn't the carrot on the stick you might think; VERY few people are actually going to put the work in for it. The mount came out more than 3 years ago. The one source I can find has less than 1,000 players who own it, making it one of the rarest mounts. And yes, I own one.
So...Why do you need access to a roulette that barely anyone is going to actually put the work for the ultimate reward? The daily reward for it is terrible, so it's no replacement for expert roulette. It's level 80 locked, so no exp.
OP has the right of it, as cynical as it is: It's the feeling of superiority. I thought this was a load of crap for the most part until a few days ago. The posts here and on reddit complaining about the new requirements speak otherwise.
There is no way for SE to filter out who is a good teacher to be a mentor. Anything they could do someone will find a way to either cheat or sabotage. So they go with the next best thing: Players who have a lot of game experience (leveling multiple jobs and duties completed), a lot of variety in that experience (all non-savage duties), and enough people taking the time to throw them a "hey, good job" (commendations). Even if people don't always use the commendation system as intended; it still takes time to actually do so. You can stumble your way into the requirements without actually being qualified to help others effectively, that much is absolutely true. But it's at least attempting to filter people with knowledge backed up by experience.
It is a status that is EARNED. Not handed to you because you pay a sub. You want it? You need to WORK for it. Because being an ACTUAL mentor is work too.
This isn't to say the system itself isn't without warranted criticism; it certainly does have its problems. But tightening up eligibility requirements, even as a bandage to it's larger problems, isn't one of them.
While I enjoy the mentor program - I must confess I've never bothered to get it. I just ask questions in general and almost every time someone helpful jumps in. One of the reasons I like this game as the community is notch down on toxic people in game. Couple odd times I got smart A responses, but usually fallen up with some helpful details. Doing roulette's - well different story for another day. Thanks to anyone here that helped me out at some point in the game.

I think the real problem with the mentor system is exclusivity. I believe the answer is to change the icon from a crown to something a little more humble, and let any one use it without any sort of requirement.
What is the intended purpose of wearing the crown? To let other players know that you would welcome questions and like the be helpful.
The 'exclusivity' of the crown seems to makes a lot of people bitter; "He is wearing a crown but he stood in bad. I didn't stand in bad even though I don't have a crown."
Exclusivity and the icon itself are responsible for turning the icon into a point of pride and source of resentment. If we take away those things then people who don't want to be helpful will be less likely to chose to wear it, and those that don't wear it wont resent it.
Will people who shouldn't be giving advice give advice under such a system? Yes. But it seems a lot of people believe that the case with the current system, so I don't see this point as a loss.
Why not just remove the crown then?I think the real problem with the mentor system is exclusivity. I believe the answer is to change the icon from a crown to something a little more humble, and let any one use it without any sort of requirement.

Cute glam and say hi is better than an npc like crowned mentor that dont even say hi let alone helping the newbie... i rather have a teacher thats not the best in teaching but willing to learn with me rather then "why dont you look up the net before coming in?" teacher
I don't mind losing the crown - the crown is only there as a sign that I'm okay with ppl asking me about stuff or that they can get an invite to the Novice Networks from me. But what I will be missing is being in the novice network myself because on most days it's a fun place to be and I like helping ppl there, answering their questions or joining them for a trial or something like that. Without being a mentor I won't be able to do this anymore.
