I'm very much in support of the gambit system; that was so good for micomanaging your companions.I think they could improve Chocobos is by implementing a diet version of the gambit system from FF12.
If you don’t know what the gambit system was, it allowed you to program your party members to make it so they could only use certain actions st certain times programmed by you. For example, you could have a healer programmed to only start healing you at a certain percentage of your HP to not waste DPS, so you could add a command like “if ally HP < 60, use Cure” or “If self HP < 40, use Curaga.” The higher a gambit was on your gambit list, the higher priority it was, so it would be best to have lower HP commands higher so they didn’t get overwritten by higher ones that would be cast more often,
Using this system, we could program our chocobos to fit our individual needs, and only let them use certain actions at certain times. You could program the bird to use the choco rush ability that stuns a target only when a enemy is casting a move, or to only use choco surge at 50%, then to execute choco cure right after at less than 50% to make sure you get the most outta choco cure and that the bird doesn’t waste time using choco surge at a higher HP percentage. Or you could get the bird cannot use a certain ability at all, I would get rid of choco region all together because it doesn’t do much at all and the time spent casting it could be better used for other moves.
