Hey OP,
I totally get where you're coming from. There are times when I want to get a good amount of progress without all the fluff and filler. There are a few options (most of which have already been stated) for you.
1. Deep Dungeon: This is the Palace of the Dead (PotD) and Heaven on High (HoH) dungeons. They're basically grind dungeons where it's a quick pick up (not even restricted to class parties / Tank - Healer - 2 DPS) and you go in and just mow things down with your class. This honestly sounds like what you're looking for - https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...e/deepdungeon/
2. Roulettes: This is an option in the duty finder menu. This is more restrictive and can cost a lot of time due to waiting on the traditional roles to join up. It's a nice breather from Deep Dungeon due to you playing your class more traditionally.
3. Squadron runs: This is also a nice option if you don't have a lot of time, sick of quests / leves, and you're bored to death with Deep Dungeon. This does cost a little more investment with your Grand Company and leveling them up. Also, it takes longer since the AI is terrible. The nice thing to look forward to is Trusts (similar to Squadron) in 71+ dungeons have incredible AI and give a lot more flavor to the dungeon with texts. https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/w...urer_Squadrons
Those are the top 3 ways I can figure you can spend some time in the game without reading a bunch of quests. You do have to get through the MSQ, but take heart, even the devs agree this grind is silly and are working on condensing it. Also, the expansions are -much- better in pacing. You've got a lot of content to get through, but it'll go by a lot faster than ARR.
Also, just a sidenote, many players refer to chocobos as chickens. It is an affectionate tease to the mascot. Please do not take some players here as representatives to players in game or the devs themselves. I've noticed a serious shift with the tone in these forums. Just take what is said here with a grain of salt. FFXIV Reddit is another form of 'forum' community that may be a nice resource of player intel for you.
Last thing, this game is absolutely capable of being the game for you. Yes it is story heavy, but the devs continually add different options for a wide range of players, b/c they're great business minded people at times, unlike posters here. Don't give up, and have fun
Last LAST thing - I've been playing this game since 1.0, and as much as I enjoy the story... it gets super longwinded at times. Up until Shadowbringers, I skipped every chat bubble Urianger gave in a nerdrage fest.... This is coming from an older gamer who played numerous old school RPGs on those classic consoles only spoken in myth at this point. So, I guess as a 'veteran,' I agree with you, if that means anything ^^;
