As we look forward to another patch in October with enhancements to DOH and DOL, one has to wonder when and if quality-of-life improvements for housing enthusiasts are ever going to come.
It's no secret, for many players the woes begin at the task of acquiring personal housing, but they do not stop there. The neglect goes far beyond that. From land acquisition to what you can put inside your house and where, there's hardly a facet of the housing system not in desperate need of improvement.
Furnishing Capacity: Now, I remember trying to decorate a large house with 200 furnishing slots, so I agree with those players who will remark that at that point 'the struggle was real'. However, at 400 slots it is still comically insufficient. How many folks wall off entire floors of their dwelling just to make one floor look well furnished and lived in, size of house notwithstanding? It's quite a few of us, and that's pitiful. You're lucky enough to get a house, and then you sacrifice half your real estate to properly furnish the other half. I honestly wonder if 800 would even be enough, but it's a good place to start!
Glitching: "Look, we're not going to use resources to fix our code, so if you can find a workaround, by all means!" A paraphrase, yes, but an accurate one, I think. Yikes! Has it come to that? Can we not make furnishings behave as tabeltop items, make anything with a flat top behave as a table? I know this all takes work, but let's get real, maybe take a little bit more of those XIV profits that get funneled into projects that we won't see until our children are graduating high school (hilarious that this sentence isn't an exaggeration) and fix the game that we are paying for and playing here and now?
Windows/Pillars: need I say more? Make them an option, not a requirement, please? Now, I do not consider this as immediate as the above-mentioned issues, but to put this as kindly as possible, some of the windows are not exactly as attractive as they might be, and we spend more time and precious resources building around those windows (and pillars, too) to hide them rather than enjoy them. And before anyone argues the realism of a house without support columns, my Au Ra has an extremely spacious basement with not a support column in sight. They're not needed. Give us the choice.
These are the most glaringly obvious arenas for improvement I can think of, and I could go more in depth on them, and I could certainly call out many more, but it's important to take things one at a time, rank the most serious offenders and set realistic goals for tackling the issues. Get people the housing they want, give them the ability to actually furnish it when they get it, and let us place furnishings where we want without glitching. Give us a response and a timeline for when we can expect things to improve because, frankly speaking, housing is in a farcically shabby state at the moment, and it has been that way for too long.
