guys.....it's international gambling legislation. Chill out. I know you don't usually think about these types of contests as gambling but it falls under the same rules as sweepstakes etc.

I agree it kinda sucks, but hey....they have all these weird laws. It's not that SE wouldn't mind giving it worldwide I am sure.

I'm in Japan now, does that means I can try the contest on the Japanese side or because my account is North American, I can't? But since I'm not in Quebec anymore, I can participate in the contest, right?

I guess I'll just put a submission and see if it works...

Good question. It's partially residency based (legal), but in the case of Final Fantasy it also depends on where your account was created.

I don't see anything about residency or account location in the Japanese announcement, but that could just be an oversight -- thinking that if you speak Japanese, you must be Japanese and living in Japan with a Japanese SE account.

And you do realize that, to use an example already mentioned on this thread, South Americans will still be excluded, even more obviously so on a JP or EU contest, right? This changes nothing in these cases

You do realize that this leaves out a lot of countries, right? They accept payments from them, just won't let them participate in contests. If you are going to enable a MMORPG to a country, do go through the paper work involved in making an event.

Or make the event in game to avoid this all together.

Doesn't matter if it's a real life item or an online item. Rules are rules. They apply to software too. Just like you can't watch certain videos in certain countries.
