Sometimes it was a matter of wanting to retain job synergy, sometimes it was a matter of level gapping, sometimes there were other factors like knowing someone's playstyle/attitude from a previous encounter. On that note, I also hated it when people replaced themselves unless they brought in a similar job.

I know that probably sounds elitist as hell, but let's face it...when there was a DRK in the group, I didn't want our Paladin replacing himself with a Ninja. Kinda rolls back around to the whole "job synergy" thing. I could, and often did, take nearly any job to a group, but I always put more thought into it than "There's a DD, grab it!!" I broke out the skillchain charts, I evaluated the group's makeup, I put some serious thought into how well anything new would fit into the group's makeup. Give me 15-30 minute's notice and I promise I'll be happy.
I totally agree with everything you say, but I have to ask: would this even matter in XIV?

In XI, the system was using /sea and the /invite flag, and the leader invited the members; but in XIV, it's the opposite--the leaders advertise their groups, and members ask to join. So you'll get tells from "unwanted" roles/players no matter what, and it's so easy just to type No and tab-tab-enter to send a "polite" response. ;D

Also, there isn't really a lot of strategy required in group building--the goal for XIV is to make just about any group able to run down whatever content. We have no skillchains, and when we do, I have a gut feeling there will be an equal(ly low) number of battle regimens for any class combination--if they even work that way. That's not to say there's no thought required, but there's no reason to say "We have a BRD, and the PLD repped himself with a WAR!"
