A previous year did have an instanced event of monsters invading Ul'dah, as happened in the end of 1.0. You could even see the Great Goobue Wall outside the gates.
We kinda got something like that last year I think. Where we got to fight in a instance version of Ul'dah
Also, random people kept turning into Good King Moogle Mog for some reason.
An instance simulating the VERY end of 1.0 would be a neat idea. Spawning into an old Mor Dhona area, fighting wave after wave of Garleans.
Unfortunately, that was never meant to have a win state, it just "ended" when they shut off the servers (i.e. when Dalamud struck), so I'm not really sure how that part would work... Stay alive for some duration, I suppose?
I wouldn't mind if they added a merchant that sells 1.0 items that still can be obtained with retainers. Apparently the onion set (except the helm) can be obtained by retainers?
Give it no ending point and a steadily building soft enrage. The task is to survive as long as possible, not for a set duration. IIRC this is how the end of Crisis Core worked. If I'm wrong about that, a number of shooters come to mind (the Firefight mode in Halo ODST, the last level in Halo Reach, pretty sure Horde Mode in Gears had an endless option, etc.).An instance simulating the VERY end of 1.0 would be a neat idea. For the purpose of the quest, either don't require the instance at all, only require that players enter, or only require passing the first wave or two.
Could be really cool.
I would love to see doom in the sky again, either via expansion or via event. Seeing dalamud and that amazing skybox again would be extremely nostalgic moment (that sky, and answers playing in the background... so cool way to send off the game).
I love the devs sending players messages too though.. so.. hope that could be included some how. Maybe on Nael's fighting stage or something, surface of Dalamud would be wild lol. Anyway, if I logged into the game with dalamud in the sky I think my heart would skip a beat (in a good way).
Also Atomos was an interesting event they could consider bringing back (without the gil issue lol). Perhaps many aetherytes get a FATE that you must level sync to (no matter the level), and so players aren't killed when they didn't want to take part (like some sort of evil pvp lol). Actually Atmos could be make an interesting mount reward too.
On the win state, I think it could be fun to make server competitions like that tree event in FFXI (that big tree that ran around and one shot people and unlocked teleport NPC lol)- the event competition designed to be up to the last minutes, perhaps some mild prepping before the final hours to make it (a tiny bit) easier*. Of course waves can go on during the week for those who don't have time to take part in the race (and can help prep the server), so these people wont be left out. In that last stretch all the servers race each other to survive (GMs watching to mess with people and perhaps putting their finger on the scale for at least one server, to allow the event to be chaotic but not "everyone failed no reward this year" xD). Winning looks like the sky being filled with bright blue light (reuse some big flashy asset) and the dalamud sky clears up. If you fail maybe it just goes to playing the ARR trailer haha.
* Outside of some hamlet like preparation mechanics, maybe Heck the bed to get a temporary relic that helps in the fight perhaps.
One of the things I thought was quite funny in WoW was that boss who killed entire towns with it's disease/virus mechanic, way way back when- I feel a reward mechanic could be quite fun to balance out the server race where you do the inverse here with the reward of the event. People who took part in the FATE and won get a blessing that they can share with others by contact or emote, and so you have a sort of community event afterwards to share the rewards (winning servers can feel special to losing servers but losing servers are not like "I hate this place, I can't believe I missed out on X reward"). Unlike the WoW virus this wouldn't kill people and by visiting a town it wouldn't be hard to obtain. Not sure what the reward would be, could be standard decorations/mounts, maybe the buff you share is the reward- like "always rested exp and free teleports for a few days or something".
Probably a lot of work for a one off event so might be good if it's on a cycle or something (every other year..?).
