The missing zones from 1.0 that haven't returned yet (or rather, parts of current zones that existed in 1.0 but were excised in ARR). Most notably, the entire southern half of Mor Dhona around where Camp Brittlebark used to be, the West Shroud for the Black Shroud, and the missing parts of Coerthas (although the Coerthas Eastern Highlands does show up as part of Frontlines, including the ruins of the old hamlet of Owl's Nest).
The old open 'public' dungeons in 1.0 that did not return either that could be new open zones (but not dungeons) as well, like Nanawa Mines or the Mun-ty Cellars.
I'm hoping we get to revisit the Far East and see areas like Nagxia and the other islands of Hingashi.
I do feel like there is more to Eorzea that could be explored! Seeing how big 1.0s map is to current day ffxiv. Something that would be neat is venturing deeper into the lands owned by the beast tribes. an entire canyon filled with the crude iron buildings of the Amalj'aa. Venturing deeper into the Sylph lands. The deep underground cities of the kobolds.
Aren’t the 1.0 areas that aren’t currently explorable uninhabitable because of damage from the calamity?
I'm personally all for seeing areas of Garlemalde.
I'd love to see the Magitek focused capital go through it's normal routines. Would be similar to Foundation, possibly a foreboding song going with it, but slowly letting itself become lighter as it hits night.
Also seeing an area outside the capital where a battle has happened would be extremely cool. I could def see a Ghimlyt Dark level battlefield but also have it be mixed with the lightning we see over the area. Make it similar to the Thunder Plains in X but have it be filled with trenches, warning signals, and other cool army things.
Would love to also see it extend the reach from Gyr Abania into it, like how Pyros clearly had the blend of Pagos leading into Pyros. Like have the mountainous areas blend into Garlemalde's more tattered land.
I love these sorts of threads so just thought to revisit and add another desire lol.
This one is a bit vague but I'd love to see a zone that has "an event" or "the thing". Kind of an expansion on my heavy mystery point. "What the thal are you talking about?"
- Right lol, so.. Imagine you're in a fairly neat looking zone (because we don't want non-neat zones of course! haha).. and a low deep bell rings... shaking your camera, veins unseen before in the land glow, a large ancient tower jutting out from a cliff and nearby structures rotates (like on huge gears), stone grinding on it's base. Heavy mist draws into the environment with a sound and deep soft beat as if the entire zone is breathing, then slowly layers on the ground creating this thick blanket that you can kick up (like the flowers in the fae zone, but fog instead lol). Creating an otherworldly vision. As the sun peaks through the clouds finally the mist evaporates and things return. Hours later it may happen again, it may not. Occasionally it rings multiple times with more dramatic effects, other times there is just a soft hum and reverberation. It's unclear what's causing it. The tower which you may enter does actually rotate and sometimes reveals unique areas not accessible before, some of these lead deeper into distinct parts of the structure. A structure loaded with scrawls on the wall, riddle and puzzle that players could solve (but there is little to no guidance, like there is actually a very long unmarked quest chain with a reward at the end). Just on the bell subject I think it would be a bit interesting to watch a certain someone basically have a traumatic experience as the bell tolls, reminding them of a certain something (like they're chasing us and then it happens so they nope out hard and send in something else instead).
- Just a remix of the mist idea and also a new visual area- here we have huge plateau structures (might think of the thunderbluffs or thousand needle in WoW, but obviously these are real life structures too lol so not saying WoW made them xD). You can walk the ground or a find paths up them, some of them that are closer together have networks on the top. However occasionally from a nearby mountain, huge Denali like mist mountain, a tsunami level amount of mist pours out and down into the open spaces of the area creating a sea of mist up to the tops of these plateaus. You can still be in the mist down below, it'll just be very very thick.. yet if you jumped you can start to swim. . . (monsters will have some moves to deal with bringing you back down to the ground/and can't swim in combat, although if you're too far to target you'll get away like if you were flying of course). If you're on the plateau structures it'll look like you're looking at a sea, jumping in from the top will cause you to sink in a bit but then float back to the surface swimming. The mist can last for literal days, occasionally some of the natives will sail ships through it (some of them you can ride, non-cutscene actual ships).
- Perhaps one of those open grasslands with some mountains (using that stereotypical northern Europe/viking vision), normally peaceful looking with some somber rains and rich picture-esq clouds.. yet occasionally the decent height grasslands begin to sway in a pattern (would be awesome of SE can get this visually even at a distance), northern lights appear as the grass defies logic in a dance (like being drawn by wind but it suddenly changes directions, and it's not hurricane weather), the water in the area begins to evaporate into the air like it's being pulled up by another gravity force (in bubbles and vapour, though it's chilly and night). The source of water for the area, a waterfall, is going upwards now and the river network begins to shrink. The aurora thickens and become visually more intense/larger. if not already playing some of that deep bass tribal with viking hum music would be perfect, the grass now formed into a distinct shapes in a general circle shape where the northern lights have also focused on, and image begins to form in the center of the lights... and then lights fizzle out and everything goes quiet, the waterfall slowly coming back down and filling up the lost water in the river. I imagine later in the MSQ you'd be able to get a group of players, perhaps the remaining willing echo users, to form a circle at the focal point around the WoL- together they're able to hold the event together and you're able to float up into the air through the northern light "portal" and come out the other end into a rift space (messed up Ascian territory). A bit like Northern Lights in real life here they'd represent a sort of "weaker" point, and like Norse a bridge, except has to do with the rift now lol (something with the bridge of light allowing safer protected passage into the rift, and or targeting a specific area of interest).
- I guess I sort of made another example that fits this before so I'll reference that too (in the other post I made here). A sand sea desert, stretching far these great dunes have some ancient structures dotting here, perhaps a large focal point object, but it is a huge open area (huge). During the day maybe dont forget to have a large dune worm
, would be awesome if the worm has collision and can be rode as well may open it's maw and eat you- where it takes you to a minizone inside of it (and if you leave through being spat up or... the other direction.. that it'll actually drop you off in different location since it moves). Known as the sand sea certain parts look like a sea made of sand (like the FFXII area), yet at night the land begins to glow and fill up with a sort of water, the ancient structures gain ghosts and activity like Spirited Away when it hits night and the street starts to wake up, giant ghost whale-manta ray like creature of vibrant colors flys through the sky, schools of color fish flying, the blazing sand sea of day turns into a vibrant paradise of night (Avatar like colors). May also have a lot of fun with some deep sand tunnels underneath, a vertically inspired sand village could be quite fun (although there are ghost "village/ruins" above so.. lots of stuff you could do as an aetheryte / village point).
- Another idea might just be there is a large volcano (like the one in ruby sea, except perhaps much bigger, scale so it defies normal expectation) and occasionally it'll erupt. Like it'll truly erupt. Rocks start falling from the sky, the mountain vomiting up it's contents, lava veins fill up, ash rushes down the mountain and begins to cloud the area, soot covers everything, for hours after the event there will be thick clouds, high heat, and a very different looking atmosphere. Over time the mess will clear up- smoke will die down, the soot on the objects will blow away in the wind, large rocks will shatter into dust (they're pre-placed 'animated' objects, so don't think I'm asking for randomly landing physics lol).
- Going off of a REALLY old ARR trailer / teaser perhaps a land mass on in an ocean area that's actually a super massive giant adamantoise- something that isn't quite clear in the begging but this new content coming with sailing (airships later? plz? <3? lol), as the island moves around the ocean where the other land masses stay static (as one would suspect they should lol). Even unlocking new areas occasionally as they move into a giant hurricane wind wall or maelstrom, you taking shelter on it's body (aetheryte on the island so you can get back once you go the first time). That wind wall idea could be used for something in the sky too like Laputa in Castle in the Sky (also mentioned in the previous post).
- More simply of the above could always take a note from WoW's book with a giant, that's always a bit unique. . First time I saw a giant (they're huge) in the game I was like.. O_O.. then I touched it and got punted right into the afterlife, hilarious xD. WoW has a few zones with super massive enemies you can see from a long long distance away. I think that'd be cool too, less of a zone concept though- but making a zone where this could fit might be part of the fun.
Just something like that which makes you sit and stare at the zone wondering "what in the world . . . ?". We have a few zones with that wild feeling but I was also hoping for a wild "activity" more than just a visual like a sense of movement, like the environment is alive and breathing too.

I expect the ruins of Amaurot - or, maybe even better, another of the cities of its time - exist on the Source somewhere.
I would like to go there.
