I was under the impression it was due to empathy. That sense of putting yourself in another persons shoes in order to understand how they feel. I don't think this is about bribing the trashman with beer to haul away abnormally large amounts of trash. It is more likely the fact that these people spend what is normally considered a religious holy day picking up everyone's trash instead of spending it with their family. No doubt it helps and might even make the experience enjoyable to come home with 20 cases of beer. People can be compassionate and considerate, this is why they leave out a case of bear.

But to say "my thank you comes in the form of the money i pay them" does not fit into this cenario. That would be equal to saying "screw the trash guys, they get paid with my tax dollar and that's thanks enough for their service" you could careless if it's christmas because maybe you aren't christian. But the odds are one of those trashmen is.

In a sense SE is the trashman of Eorzea. They might not exactly work on holidays, but i would not doubt that Yoshida does. The forums can be used in a sense to leave them bottles of beer, or tips - if you want to go with the waitress metaphor. Your thanks is the continous support you provide SE in the form of a monthly payment. But really all of this is for the players' enjoyment, isn't it?

It's nice to let the developers know they've done a good job when that's the case, just as much as you would let them know about a bug.
