Two names are cumbersome.

wuuuuttt? lol for realz? I would much rather have two names, and the option to pick a name i really want then end up named xx_Kyri_xx and STILL have that taken too. The two name system was something I -really- complimented SE for and I wish and hope every mmo picks this up.

Perhaps just an option to display either both or only your first name in our configurations.
I would also like it if they allowed a name change in 2.0, I am not happy with my first name and used it only because I can not use 'Nique' (banned word in french it seems)- my usual first name... ^_^

This is an interesting perspective to see...I honestly thought surnames were nothing short of genius, and something that should be implemented in every MMO. I spend a lot of time thinking up my names, since they're going to be stuck to my toons for an extended period of time...often hours, only to have to start all over again when I discover the one I wanted is taken. Seems like it would be a waste of time to have the last name truncated or go unseen, though I can see where they could get cumbersome. I'm sure not everyone stopped to think about the length of their name before going to town. Personally I try to keep my names short, 2-3 syllables max and easy to spell regardless of whether there's a surname or not.

While the option would be nice, it won't happen. I can almost guarantee that it would HAVE to be one of the other. I would think that with the current game version, and likely 2.0, that they would only be able to support one of the two options. And the amount of trouble it would be to have everyone rename their characters after they have all been ported over to the 2.0 servers and not to mention the amount of people who would rage at the loss of their surname, it would not even be remotely worth it.

But honestly, there really are better things for them to be worrying about right now, don't you think?
