I was a long time hardcore EQ2 raider until everything went tits up. I've been playing EVE for almost 15 years. Since the demise of EQ2 I had tried most of the new startup MMORPGs. Obviously I avoided WoW, mainly because of the community. Initially I avoided FFXIV too because of the original launch debacle, it had become a bit of a joke in MMO circles, and for no good reason had ignored it ever since.
A month ago, in a moment of weakness, I gritted my teeth through the obscure account management process and eventually found myself in Gridania playing an Archer. Eventually got him up to Bard and mid level 40s but I wasn't feeling the love. I had learned a few things due to my short life in the game and decided to change class, and being a bit of a min/maxer rolled a new character to start again rather than continue with my existing character. I decided to go back to my roots in EQ2 and became a Conjurer while at the same time keeping up with all the crafting/gathering classes. Last week my character graduated to White Mage and I have to say I'm finding the game far nicer to play. Healers don't wait for groups for one.
Parachuting into an established game with a mature community is far preferable to forging the frontiers of a new game. Add to that the fact I lucked in to FFXIV as Shadowbringers attracted a new batch of sprouts so that my low level shenanigans weren't conducted alone. The one thing I can't get to grips with however are all the acronyms that fly around. Half the time I don't know if what been referred to is a zone, an instance, an item or a skill. But this is what I enjoy. Knowing that there is so much to learn.
I'm avoiding joining a FC just now until I get to at least lvl 50 as in my experience there is always the danger new players risk getting ignored or else pushed faster than they would comfortably prefer.
So that's it really. Nothing more to say than Hi really. Enjoying the show (apart from the inconsistently voiced cut scenes at low levels). Hope to see you in game.
PS Thanks to the dude that accosted me outside the Adders Nest the night before last and randomly gave me 4m gil. Not a huge amount for you end gamers I know but life changing for a newbie such as myself. It means I can level tradeskills with impunity and keep my jewellery half decent.
