It's the least they can do, even if they're against "ruininig" open world things.

Limsa has Astalicia, which technically the captain can make exception. Ul'dah has gladiator tournament area.
Gridania can connect to the old Feast area through the Black Boar gate (if they're not going to add 8v8 back).
They are rather secluded/segregated, it's a problem in every zone but more importantly accessible in starting cities.

People who are against this are blowing it out of proportion... smh. PVP isn't even big in this game, and there are many other things people can "spam" you with like FC invites and party invites and trade invites and yet people... wow... don't? Because that isn't tolerated in this game. I always love seeing people make up situations that haven't even happened and have no sign of happening just to take away something fun that others want.

It seems the common denominator regarding the rejection of this idea is their experiences in other games with pvp. When I read I don't want people spamming me duel requests, I see this: I was in X game and it was either open pvp zones or the devs there had no foresight to put auto-decline and the PKing was horrible.

If we could dial back the past pvp ptsd and actually come up with some concise suggestions that allows for non-pvpers and pvpers to not step on each others foot, that would be swell.

If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.

Yep exactly, and I don't play it any more, but I played Elder Scrolls Online for a bit, and I think it's quite heavily PVP focused and has PVP duels available. I never had a problem with duel spam even if I got a maybe 3 unwanted ones, so I think people are really out of touch with their hatred here. But even just designated areas for PvP duels like Triple Triad has(like OP mentioned... lol) could be great. But people just too bullheaded to even consider it. I bet it could even be a strict opt in, with having a blue unlock quest for the option to even be available to someone that you pick up in the wolves den.

OP, it's a great suggestion, and one I agree with.
Sadly, PvP is demonised in FFXIV, so most (of not all) PvP suggestions in general discussion gets heavy backlash.
I once suggested that PvP needed more modes, and to have smaller modes that are just one team vs another, rather than the 3 teams versing another thing, like what we have with FLs atm.

You know what I got response I got? "WoW has more PvP modes, WoW is more toxic, no PvP in FFXIV or it would become more toxic" XD
I have actually experienced far more toxic people in PvE than PvP.
I like both PvE and PvP so I think it would be nice if PvP was more fleshed out, so I don't have to sub to any other game but FFXIV if I want to do some fun PvP once in a while.

Believe it or not, I played both WoW and Runescape in PvP areas, (People who duel outside goldshire, and people who duel in arenas northeast of Al Kharid) and you don't actually get spammed with duel requests. Maybe one person challenges you, but if you say something like "I iz bad, me no want to PvP" they leave you alone. They won't harass you for declining "Why did you decline? Are you bad at the game" if you preemptively already say you are bad (even if you are actually not bad) :P
The dual arenas where you could watch people duel in Runescape was pretty fun, you could throw rotten tomatoes from the stands at duelists

But if y'all are really scared of duel spams, maybe we can edit search info to a symbol of "accepting duels" and if you don't have the symbol on, duel requests won't go through. That way players can see exactly who wants to duel or not, and the non duelist won't get any duel requests.

Long as it isn't forced upon anyone, I don't see why not. Not a fan of PvP anyway but wouldn't say no to watching others go at it.

Really, no thanks. Even if you can auto decline or even not unlock, you can still get pestered in tell or any other chat. For some reason hormonal 14 year olds think it’s okay to spam demands for duels in this way just because you’re playing a female character. (Yes I’m generalising but if they’re NOT hormonal 14 year olds, they really have no excuse) This has the potential to affect my overall enjoyment of my go-to MMO

Lol why are you coming up with all these super hypotheticals? You can get pestered in /tells now for literally anything. Wolve's Den, Triple Triad, Chocobo racing. Come on now, what you're saying is silly.

I've been thinking about this and came to the conclusion that one of my biggest gripes/problems with this wouldn't be too much of an issue in FFXIV - this is because unlike in other MMO's, harassing players does actually get punished if reported. So with the current TOS for XIV, if someone was to get all pissy in tells/yells/shouts because you were not dueling them...they'd sooner or later find themselves reported and punished for it.

There is still the other big issue/problem I have - the graphical & sound "noise" from the duel's. It's a problem I have with duels in ESO, that when they happen the noise and visual effect's from the fights happen for everyone... and the visual & sound effects for XIV skills are way, way more obvious? glaring? than ESO's are. Yes I know that there are options to turn down / off other players combat effects.

I'd not do 1v1 duel'ing myself, but wouldn't be against it really if they can enable an "auto-decline" or "Not challengable" option where I could set that on and never have to worry about dueling request's, and if they can do something about duel combat effects not showing for everyone.

And I know some might pfft at that 2nd issue... but based on what happened in ESO, every capital cities aetheryte (sp?) would have duels going on constantly, as well as around marketboards and the npc market section. Is ESO the cities "port" places are where duels happen constantly.. so whenever you port into town, it takes that bit longer now as the game has to load in all the duels that are constantly taking place. The only reason they don't also duel around shops is their attacks could also hit NPC's when dueling, which would get them a bounty and likely killed by npc guards... so they are restricted to duels where their aren't npc's that can be hit. XIV doen't have this ussue... so they'd be free to duel around npc's... and I'd guarantee that it'll happen.
