In terms of sheer numbers, the best PC will always be more powerful than the best console. Maybe not as efficient, maybe not as practical, maybe not as cheap, but definitely more powerful.

That being said... there's a reason you don't see PC exclusive games that truly make the most of that raw power.

The PS5 will be BC with PS4 games. Since PS5 will most likely be able to boost the performance of the PS4 client to 4K/60fps, is there any point in making a PS5 client?

Because the PS4 client won't have the settings to run it at 4k/60fps? A PS5 client should be tuned to what the PS5 can do instead of the PS4.

They set FF14 to run the same / similar on all platforms. They're not going to overscale it for PS5 without doing so in a way other systems support.

If you were to take a representative sample of all the PC’s that people game on ... I have to wonder whether the average power of those PC’s meets or exceeds that of the two main consoles (PS4, Xbox).

Two major assumptions are made in the whole ‘PC vs Console’ debate :

One is that the potential of PCs is always realized. That because a PC can be upgraded, it always is upgraded. That may be true in some cases, but it is not true in all cases.

The other is that the maximum hardware specs available determine the game’s potential. It is the minimum specs, not the maximum specs, that ‘hold the game back’. When the game was on PS3, the PS3 had lower specs than most PC’s. Thus, it could truthfully be said, and SE even said it (citing PS3 limitations), that the PS3 was holding the game back. Now? Is the PS4 holding the game back? Are the minimum specs higher than what a PS4 can manage? Or are the PC’s holding the game back, with their older legacy components?

Its nice to see a few in this thread that are not making the same baseless assumptions. I just wish it was more the norm than the exception.

It’s at the end of the console generation so I would imagine most gaming PCs are more powerful at this point, that will change when the new consoles launch.

That's what I'm getting at is , I understand pound for pound a PC will have more brute power, but brute power isnt the end all be all of video games especially when the power exponentially more expensive for less that 5-10% increase in performance, that brute power is neccessary because of the lack of real optimization. Not to mention the ps5 like I mentioned will be 4k 60/fps 8k 30fps and fully VR capable right out of the box and all media will be 8k capable, how many PCs out there can do that on average? Now the PC is the limiting factor not to mention it will come with a SSD, that's better than 70% of all PCs and laptops out their combined then I also imagine the ps5 will be cheaper than 100% of all PCs that can do similar things. I mean to push all that power plus the equipment? Your talking top end GPUs already eclipse the starting price of a Ps5. Then you add in development and optimization and accessibility. Pound for pound a ps5 will have fewer limits than and PC game for the "average" consumer. Not everyone can run mods, of 144 at 10p fps so that point is moot, that's like saying because someone owns a honda civic that has 800rwhp all base model mustang's are shitty in comparison. The accessibility and over9 polish you will be getting in ps5 is going to severely limit PCs future especially with most manufacturers of PC parts reaching theoretical limits in chip sets.

So the ps5 will overall not be the limiting factor in ff14 future it will be the PC, the PC will be the one with to many variables and having to spec the lowest common denominator compared to plug and play ps5 and various other perks. Plus the ps4 can handle some pretty impressive shit , for as much shit at anthem gets its visually stunning even on an OG playstation.

I built a gaming PC for my Niece, that has a GTX 1060, 16GB of Ram, Ryzen 5 2600, Gaming Mobo, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Case, Power Supply, Speakers, Headphones. $1187 from Newegg building it myself, with her helping since was her birthday and x-mas present.

Take into account the launch price of the PS4 at $399, and a TV that can even use all the features being around $699. Price looks damned similar to me. Games are cheaper for her on PC as well, she can use her Xbox and PS4 controller on her PC by just plugging it in as well.

Now, make it a TV that can match a good monitors refresh rate AND a PS4 Pro. Yah... Over twice as much as her simple build I did for her...

How good is that monitor? Ssd? Quality M&K? Because a half decent one that can run 4k is gonna a dime, plus the GPU to run it. I could Google it but thats gonna put you well into the 2k+ mark. Where the ps5 will be 500-600 and people will already have 4k TVs for their media. Next what about VR capable and 8k media capable? You bought the bare minimum and that's why I am saying the ps5 will be better than your average PC user. That's the way the cookie crumbles. Accessibility, and price point per pound of graphical/processing power the ps5 and new xbox will be king unfortunately.

On the whole console vs PC thing I prefer PC because of all it can do beyond just play the game. Like they usually come with mod support even if unofficial (which means console likely has a very poor or non-existent version of it), and when the console has official mod support the PC version is almost always vastly superior option then. Beyond that there is always modifications to your programs past standard mods, like telling that always online single player game or unwarranted tracking to go away. Both of those points also go to longevity of the game without having to repurchase it 8 times as companies are want to do, rather the modders will push the system as technology and their free time allows (the system, a pc, being grow-able vs you don't really get to mod your ps4 game to push out more than it already did the first time because it doesn't grow- going back to that awesome, sometimes very deep level, modding and evolving longevity). Easy multi tasking (dual monitor, browsing, etc, like I'm writing this while in the MSQ roulette). That and if you're willing to spend (more than a console) they're technically the more powerful option. Of course less cost effective lol, also harder for devs to optimize for- so "slightly better PC builds" are probably just as good or worse for similar games on consoles but vastly more powerful PC options (that cost 2x +) are obviously going to produce much better results. Also I like more diverse storefront options (not as beholden to one store).

On the PlayStation specifically I used to adore the PS but I'm not a fan of the censorship they're doing in recent times (more so than standard lol) and while it's nothing that'd make me hate the game itself (they're usually minor one or two off things here and there), I still don't want to encourage that when I can be just as well on my PC (sad I miss a few games but oh well). So I'll probably not get a PS5 and not out of lack of ability or interest in some of the games (am tempted) I just don't like their philosophy that they need to sanitize things (and I prefer to encourage companies that publish across multiple platforms anyways, I don't need a PC exclusive and I don't need a PS5/Xbone480 exclusive either). Although I'm okay with optional de-censorship patches and stuff (if the sanitation is optional, even if default- not that Sony is really doing that though), I just really don't like non-optional censorship. I'm not a kid and kids who are honestly influenced enough to require what you're censoring should probably not be playing the game in the first place then.

Finally away from some of the tangent points I saw and onto the main point originally of the thread lol, I think a pre-order bonus would be pretty cool. I'm not sure what, perhaps a discount or maybe some mog shop crysta or something could be neat. Would really hope it's not unique items or like that to the ps5 though (because I don't intend to play on console for this game, and also because of the above points lol), but still something would be neat. Get more players on the upgraded system for smoother experience and better free word of mouth (looks better, runs smoother, probably more likely other friends will see this smooth game and be more interested then). Also if the bonus isn't greater than the cost of buying the new license then they'll still make money and sony probably be happy too, maybe a partner deal could be struck.
