Everyone - real living people, right? Not NPCs. From Emet Selch's point of view, there is exactly two people left alive, game servers are running on dead people energy and not giving it back.

We kill NPC chickens and dogs all the time. In-game - not sure about dragons. They survived previous rejoinings. But of course Ascians have created the Allagan Empire that killed Bahamut. Hardly a genocide though.

It's called "breaking the fourth wall". Cartoons have had appealed personally to me, I still don't think they're alive.

I understand the sentiment. If in a game I see a button "kill this nice NPC", I would not push it. But I would uninstall the game and that would "kill" the NPC way more finally.

    Exactly this

They'll have to work overtime to make the next antagonist a fraction as entertaining as Emet-Selch was

I miss Emet-slech. By far my favorite villain as of lately. At first I didn't like him at all and was waiting for him to get somewhere else. As time went on, I started to really enjoy having him around up to the betrayal I was NOT expecting.. His witty remarks. The lore he's given us... Shame he's gone but I'm so looking forward to replaying ShadowBringers in Newgame+.

I'm also of the opinion that Emet should stay dead, as bringing him back would cheapen the end of the 5.0 story. I also concur that we should see more of his past, which I think we'll get glimpses of it in time, as we start learning more of our past connection with him as an Ancient before the Terminus. Elidibus has been playing the whole "mysterious" bit for so long, I can only but hope that when he completely drops all pretense he ends up being almost as interesting. I think it will be hard to surpass Emet though. As for Zenos, I still don't know what to think about him anymore. I was hoping he would join up with Gaius and Estinien as a begrudging ally as they infiltrate Garlemald throughout 5.0, and maybe use that as a transitioning point to start doing something a little different with him. This unfortunately didn't happen, so here we are.

I don't think he is dead, usually they have to trap his light in a crystal right?

I don't think any of them are dead someone is bound to steal those crystals and bust them out.

Emet-Selch is my favorite character in FFXIV by far. I really, really hope we get a wind-up Emet-Selch sometime, even though Yoshi-P said no.

I also don't think he's dead, and it's not only because I want him to come back.

Because it's literally the same logic. Our original self is not really us but something we once were with entirely different thoughts, appearance, memories, everything. The kid from the 14th is also a part of us. We, the WoL/D are not a child either nor did we share the same parents as said kid.

If Hades had a fling/thing/anything with who we used to be, it is not us personally. But as the player, you could accept or deny this as feelings carried over without diminishing that aspect.
Personally it's not upsetting in anyway, shape, or form. I simply voiced an opinion for us to be given a choice and not have it be shoved down our throats. I can be happy for those that want that kind of development for their characters past, but it shouldn't come at the expense of others that may want otherwise, especially if we're potentially getting a glimpse into our former selves past here. Let us decide how to shape it, even if it's done via minor choices of simple yes and no options. As for why Arbert's establish history gets a pass? Well a bit of his relationship to his comrades was already cemented in the lore books, so that ship had sailed. They just fleshed out more information and details on what were in those pages. Whereas with our whole self we know so little and nothing has been set in stone just yet. Also the fact that these aren't actually our WoL/D isn't lost on me, but it is still our story.

Alright, not upsetting. But Ardbert is still an absolute piece of us. As is whoever our Ancient self was. The reason I say this is because I know not everyone wants to have something with him, but it adds a narrative to his feelings for us and all our sundered pieces. How did he feel about any of us he encountered? Arbert included. He sees the color of our soul, and who we are today after so many rejoinings is probably the closest he's gotten to a friend or at least someone familiar in thousands of years. Other ascians withstanding.

In short, it wouldn't hurt. Because it's of the past that cannot change.

    Where's my Emet figure, SE?

Put an emote on it if you need to (his dismissive wave), but really I just want a figure of my boy.
