I might be incorrect, but I was always under the impression that the stories were basically dropped and then unified into the mess of a storyline so they could rush the game out.

I think so, too.
I know, I know, they will continue the main scenario in 2.0.
But it's going to be the R20+ scenario in Ul'dah, right?
Not the totally interesting storylines of the cities.
We have main story from R20 to R46, and all this time the "saviors of the wood" do nothing; we never return to Limsa to learn more about the Ascian guy, the key, the treasure or fight the sahagins.
We never even try to find out more about the approaching danger the dead father in Ul'dah tried to warn us about.
In all 3 storylines, something big happens, and the only reaction is "Oh, ho..you should visit the Walking Sands. Don't try to figure out what just happened, go play with the Sylphs..and a few Garleans."

I really hope at some point in 2.0 we get more of the original stories back

Ul'dah plot is somewhat continued by the Goldsmith quest, at least the assassination part.

There on hold until 2.0, we need the seventh umbral era event because thats whats going to change the face of Eorzea for 2.0, the devs wanna focus on that to get it done on time.

I understand that, I would just expect them to be properly reworked, logical, and maintain a high level of polish for 2.0.

This is me... evil woman throws a knife with high precision at Harry Potter while he's teleporting. Next scene, shows Harry Potter holding his wound, bleeding himself and worried about facing Voldemort. He looks up and there's a sparkling vampire with gorgeous hair standing there who walks off into the sunset with Bella and the next three movies are about his adventures instead.

I want to know what happens to Harry!!!
