Someone hacked the user's account, invited and promoted a dummy account, cleared out the gil, then left. I doubt there was a lack of security, an inside job as some like to point out, or carelessness here. Sad truth of today is, no matter how secure you think you are people have a way to hack in and steal your info if they want it. Look at all the latest security breaches for an idea there.
"Hacking" accounts is probably possible (if you put in enough time, effort and ressources, everything is hackable) but not worth the effort. 99.99% of cases involve the account owner not paying attention, social engineering, phishing mails or websites, malware, or not changing email/password combinations after they already leaked somewhere else.
Actual hacking is way too costly in means of time and effort to be worthwhile, that's the reason it doesn't happen to all of us on a daily basis. It'd cost criminals more than they can make by hacking us poor peasants ^^

Back in my years on imvu, someone made this exact point. Different user base, same problems. People making thread after thread of HACKED!!! when in reality, it was mostly people giving passwords and going to non-secure sources/not logging out and getting their accounts jacked. And their customer support is nowhere close to SE or even Nexon.

Actually, there are some people out there that actually hack accounts by sniffing packet logins, which tend to be around 300+ bytes. It’s a method known as MD5 and +XOR which is old in the scene, so I don’t mind saying it. There was even a method to randomly access anyone’s account back in 4.0 but I got that method reported as I don’t want FFXIV hacked by degenerates. Most people are quite scummy, and will steal passwords and logins through Gil selling websites, etc, so it’s understandable why people would think actual hacking doesn’t occur.

Just want to spread the message that it actually does, and can happen. It just depends on if the hacker is willing to risk going to jail or not over hacking your account, since SE I assume can just contact whatever VPN company they are under and track em down.

Hmm... if gil is stolen from an FC by a hacker, a hacker who is likely to sell that gil. Then would it not be in Squenix own interest to deal with it? That is if they actually care about gil sellers and stopping them.

I guess you've never had to deal with Nexon support and their tendency to not only be completely inept at dealing with hackers, but often banning innocent accounts and having zero rollbacks at all.

SE is not the worst. And frankly, FC chests being 100% the player's responsibility is the best way forward for them for many reasons - not the least of which is a way it can be defrauded as pointed out earlier.

They do seem horribly inept at handling anything other very easily resolved social issues (Such as someone cussing someone out, as previously stated).

If they ever have to do more then a cursory investigation to get to the root of the problem, they'll most likely just opt for a canned response and abandon it.

This is likely why certain cases such as stalkers (Or in my personal case, some unknown party spreading blatant lies about me behind the scenes) seldom get resolved as if they can't simply reference your chat log or another player's for their answers, they'd rather not bother.

When I see these accusations of customer support being useless, I wonder how the initial report looked. Social issues to technical, if you word your report in full detail in a business like manner, it only makes the GMs job easier.

Literally the 1 and only time I've known of a mass issue with actually SE (since people toss Square Enix like it's only XIV) was with Drakengard 3 pre-orders and third party shipment which was known to be faulty.

Oh this is easy. Literally any game published by EA. Their support is a chat box that points you to a forum like this populated by other people having the same issue. That's it. They let you post, whine, ect then ignore you and don't fix your problem. Sometimes the forums will have people working together to solve the problem themselves, cause EA don't give a ****, but most of the time it's just people bitching and getting ignored.

I had to deal with SE support once and everything went fast and nice, so I really don't have a reason to complain. I can understand that you think they should do more in your case and punish the man who deceived you, but the truth is that making your FC's belongings as safe as possible is your and it's members responsibility. People from SE don't know what happens behind the game wall, so they have to be really careful about this kind of thing and I really can't blame them for their reaction. They have only your words - they don't even know if your friend's account really has been hacked (you can use VPN and log in from every place in the world, so it is really not a proof). It's sad to say but it looks like it's a lesson about the account security for every one of us and I suppose it's the way you and your friend should treat it, too.

Update on the situation with my friend being hacked:

So, he changed his password, got 2FA, and got that roll back. But still the hacker managed to gain access to his account AGAIN! We don't know how he's doing it but this austrian is DDOSing my friends internet and managing to circumvent all precautions, at this point there is literally NOTHING more we can do to prevent it, it is ENTIRELY on square enix to ensure that the measures THEY PUT IN PLACE actually WORK. Frankly if his account isn't safe, none of ours are. This is a total clusterfunk and square has to take some level of responsibility in this.

Edit: oh and before anyone claims "INSIDE MAN INSIDE MAN!" there was no gil left to steal in our chest as the admins didn't give us that back (actually thank god they're so inept because getting hacked and robbed twice in the same week is bordering on suspect).

The most likely reason for the repeated hacking 5 days after the initial hack was probably to see if the friend had any more gil worth taking. It's like they were waiting for the roll back or something?!

Edit 2: there's reason to believe a combination of DDOS and keylogger were used to circumvent his account, there are apparently easily downloadable tools out there that can circumvent 2FA and keyloggers that can remain undetected by modern anti-virus software. The future is here, it's scary, and there's nothing an individual can do about it.
