    Abbreviations and such

    Hello!

Where can I find the bank/auction house? Is there even one?
Also, please direct this gal to a long list of abbreviations and other sayings and whatnots; so much of what people write looks like gobbledygook, it's super hard to follow.

Well it seems you are level 17... so the groans are likely from the low level dungeons which are a tedious slog. But it could also be due to the fact that Pugilist do not have any AOE attack at that level, making the dungeons last longer. Personally I don't find an additional 5 minutes to be groan worthy but some people really really hate the low level dungeons. Don't worry though, for the most part this sort of behavior does no continue as you will get an AOE skill at level 26.

Bank/auction house is the Market Board. it can be found in all major cities (Gridania, Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa) and further the expansion cities that you can go to later. In order to sell on the market board you need to finish the main story quest up until lvl.17, titled The Scions of the Seventh Dawn. This quest gives you the permission to hire a retainer, which you can do from the Retainer Vocate in the market area. Retainer can sell up to 20 items at a time.

Here is a great list of terms people use https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/D...erms_and_Slang

This site, Gamerescape is great for many other things, from the list of Main story quests, so you can see how far you need to go, to more detailed things like how exactly to obtain certain items.

This is a very useful page that tells you when certain features become available to you https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/G...Locked_Content

While everyone has different opinions on what they think is fun to play, there aren't any classes/jobs that people actively try to avoid in parties. All jobs are fine in that respect.

(You may see people on the forums say things like 'ninja is dead', or 'astrologian is the worst healers', and the like, but that's only relevant to the VERY small group of serious min/maxers trying to push progression raids, and such. It doesn't apply to 99.9% of players.)

This game's auction house is called the Market Board. There are some in every major city and housing area. In Ul'dah (assuming, because pugilist) they're at the Sapphire Avenue Exchange in the Steps of Thal.

Banks are rolled into retainers, which can be accessed from the Summoning Bells (located near market boards, and in inn rooms.) You unlock retainers through the main story in the mid-teens.

There are a LOT of abbreviations so it may be better to just ask about anything you're specifically confused about.

Here are some of the big ones though:

    MSQ - Main Scenario Quest
ARR - A Realm Reborn (aka, 2.0. The base game, everything level 50 and under)
HW - Heavensward (aka, 3.0. The first expansion, everything level 51-60)
SB - Stormblood (aka, 4.0. The second expansion, everything level 61-70)
ShB - Shadowbringers (aka, 5.0. The third and current expansion, everything level 71-80)
    DF - Duty Finder
    PF - Party Finder
DoW - Disciple of War (physical classes/jobs)
DoM - Disciple of Magic (caster classes/jobs)
DoH - Disciple of the Hand (crafting classes)
DoL - Disciple of the Land (gathering classes)
HM - Hard Mode (a higher level version of a lower level dungeon or trial)
EX - Extreme (an even harder version of said trial)
MB - Market Board (auction house)

To add to this, the reason it starts from "2.0" is because there was an earlier version of the game with a separate storyline, no longer playable, that led up to the Calamity that happened five years before ARR begins. So you'll see people refer to "1.0" as well.

    Welcome to Eorzea!

For an (incomplete) list of abbreviations both official and player-created used in the game, this list is definetely helpful. (And already provided by Endeleon above, so I concur ).

And adding further info on Iscah's point of the difference between '1.0' and '2.0' versions of the game, you'll often see or hear the term 'Legacy' used in reference to FFXIV 1.0, and this can be very confusing because the same term is used to describe completely different things, so just be aware of that. To summarise the most common uses and differences though:

'Legacy Campaign' - a special qualification players of the original version of FFXIV could attain by paying for 90 days of subscription in the original game - this granted special bonuses in ARR (specifically the unique Legacy Chocobo mount, a permenant reduced subscription price for ARR, day 1 elegibility for phase 1 of ARR's Beta Test, and an option to have the player's name or an alias listed in ARR's end credits - this last point can be seen right at the end under 'Meteor Survivors', my own name is included incidentally ). Legacy Campaign status has not been attainable since September 2012.
'Legacy Story' - 1.0 players who satisified certain gameplay requirements in 1.0's story gained a slightly different storyline in ARR with extra or different cutscenes that basically had their character reappear in post-Calamity Eorzea and which reference their actions in the old game. It's not a completely different story though (other than having a different starting opening), but just one that references the player's accomplishments in 1.0.
'Legacy Mount' - term usually given to the aforementioned Legacy Chocobo, a special mount given to players who were elegibile for the Legacy Campaign. It is also used to refer to the seperate Goobbue mount that was available during a special event in 1.0 but only for a limited time, and is also now unattainable too.
'Legacy Character' - just used to describe a character originally created in 1.0 and transferred into the new game. Legacy characters start ARR with all their previously attained levels, EXP, classes, Jobs, gear and items intact. They also have a special mark that identifies them as such (see below).
'Legacy Mark' - also officially called by SE 'The Mark of the Twelve'. This is a special tattoo that appears on the back of a player character that was originally created in 1.0 and transferred into ARR. The mark can be hidden and made visible at will by typing the '/lmark' or '/legacymark' command. It's often hidden by armour though so even if a character does have it visible it often isn't seen.
'Legacy Server' - like Legacy Characters, SE reused some of the server names from 1.0 and these servers were designated 'Legacy Servers' because unlike 'new' servers which were restricted to only having new characters created on them, 1.0 characters could only transfer to Legacy servers (while also welcoming new characters created on them as well). This restriction was long since removed though, but the 'Legacy' branding still remains. Legacy servers can also be identified by their names all being names of famous or reoccuring weapons throughout the FF series ('new' servers have the names of summons, monsters and characters).
'Legacy Camera' - a setting in the Config that changes the default camera control setting in ARR to one resembling the old 1.0 camera (although personally I think it works a lot better than the actual 1.0 camera, but that's me.).
'Legacy Achievement' - old achievements that were only available to be gained back in 1.0 and are now unattainable. They are listed in ARR's Achievement list under the 'Legacy' tab, but this tab is not available on a new character and so would not even be known as having existed by most players.

As for why the 1.0 version is no longer playable, that's because it was the original version of the game and was released incomplete and full of bugs and issues, many of which simply could not be fixed. SE replaced the development team responsible for that version completely with a new team and who decided that the then current game simply was beyond salvation, and instead begun development on a complete reboot for it, or 'version 2.0'. This rebooted version is A Realm Reborn (ARR), the game you're now playing.

But rather than throw the existing 1.0 players under the bus, SE transfered all existing 1.0 character data into the new game, with ARR not only serving as a reboot to 1.0, but a sort-of sequel as well, with the 7th Calamity (depicted in the 'End of an Era'/'New Beginning' trailer) serving as the lore reason for the changed zones and improvements in the new game. FFXIV 1.0 is now completely inaccessable and gone forever, but you do not need to know anything that happened back then as there was not that much story covered in 1.0, such was the terrible state that original version was in, and much of what happened back then is now retconned anyway. So don't feel you've missed out on not knowing what happened in 1.0 as ARR provides the relevant information to ARR's story anyway where necessary.

I'm really sorry for the text dump, but hopefully that clarified the differences between '1.0'/Legacy' and '2.0/ARR'.

Thank you all for your answers pertaining to the abbreviations. I hated feeling lost, this will help me acclimate myself to the game that much quicker.
Also, I had no clue that this wasn't the first version of the game, good to know.

    Thanks!
