    (Spoiler) About amaurots downfall

    Heyo guys

So basically after finishing shb, I have wondered about something, emet told us that the creation magic suddenly went crazy and more stuff happened forcing the amaurotians to summon zodiark (from what I understood).

Now the question is , what caused all these catastrophes?

I theorize that there was something inside the planet that caused the chain reaction.

    What do you think?

According to the wiki : "At some point, a mysterious "sound" emanating from the depths of their star caused the Ancients to lose control of their Creation magic, unleashing monsters formed from their subconscious fears. "

Now what caused the sound, we don't know. It may have been the result of some malicious design to destroy The Ancients. It appears even the Ascians never figured out the cause in the years after the Sundering and if Emet managed to Rejoin the Star, history may well have repeated itself. I assume the Ascians were complacent because they assume they'll have Zodiark to prevent the effects and thus never looked too deeply into the cause. This is pure speculation on my part.

One thing to keep in mind, that Amaurot is a CITY. It's not the entire planet. It was just seen as a "capital". (Just saying it because the race isn't called after the city - small distinction).

What was known is that there was a sound that disrupted the creation magic - it's not known what caused this sound but it was a cry from the planet itself from what we know.

This caused creation magic to go wild because of the disruption and also caused the Ancients to create beings out of their own fears.

What is said in game is A noise from within the earth started to manifest, disrupting the Ancient's creation magic every time they heard it. It started localized, but has time went, the problem amplified. At the end, the problem was so bad their own magic started to manifest their deepest fears.

That's what we know and we can only speculate from here. It's already said the sound's origin was from deep within the star/planet. My hypothesis is the Ancient's creation magick is somehow related to the primordial Darkness and its heavy usage created the original imbalance between Light and Darkness. If I'm right, bolstering the Darkness so, might have given the Darkness that hunger for more power.

Here I'm referring to the Antitower cutscene: There, Minifilia/Hydelyn told us that Light and Darkness were at peace/equilibrium at the beginning of time. I'm increasingly skeptical it might refer to a time after their summoning. I think, somehow, the Darkness have lured the convocation to summon a deity so Darkness could overwhelm Light.

Wanna also call attention to the fact there were a LOT of meteors from space involved in the end there. Whether that's something/someone/the Ancients casting "meteor" or whether its actual debris from space, I don't know. But the calamity seemed to come at them from both directions, below the ground and above it.

Looking forward to defeating Zodiark, thinking we've done good, only for the ground to start screaming and meteor showers to start pelting the world again. lol

I agree. I think this is becoming the only way that you can interpret that scene at this point. Either that or "Hydaelyn lied" and I don't think she did. She just didn't mention the Ancients in btwn the "primordial light/dark" bit and the sundering.

Technically speaking "the beginning"(for her) would be about the same time as hyde was summoned to balance out zodiark, and from what i gathered the ascians lived without a concept of time as they seemed to be immortal or free from age. If the umbral/astral concept of time is true they could very well of been operating in some quasi stasis timezone

I would not be surprised at all if the "noise" were the darkness already planning its embodiment.

An alternative possibility could have been suggested by the Anyder dungeon, though, and the lore associated with it. Anyder teaches us that a) Lahabrea was a professor of something called "phantomology" which as far as I can tell is creating monsters for science and as a strange art form, and b) that Anyder seemed to have trouble controlling its creations. We know Archaeotania broke out, and a bunch of creatures did as well, none of which seems directly related to the crisis.

Amaurot made me think of Dumbledore and the Pensieve from Harry Potter. Emet-Selch recreated his memories perfectly, but was it only nostalgia that motivated him? Maybe he was trying to figure out the source of the original crisis by recreating it, and maybe Anyder is part of that recreation, so that he could examine and re-examine it again. And in the 10,000+ years since the events portrayed, it must have occurred to him that an expert monster maker was in his midst, and that that that monster maker's creations sometimes escaped.

It's even possible that the two things are connected. Perhaps Lahabrea was working alongside the voice of the darkness all along. He clearly had a major hand in the summoning - there is a statue of Zodiark in his section of Anyder. It is even possible he planned the crisis, which may explain his extra anger and bitterness compared with his fellow Ascians with Hydaelyn.

I like to think the sound coming from the planet was the planet itself rejecting the Ascians manipulation of reality.

Planets having their own will is a regular concept in final fantasy series, a few games even had the "Weapon" monsters that are summoned when the planet faces a problem.

In FF7 (a game that heavily influences FFXIV) these weapons had pretty specific purposes (especially chaos and omega), showing the planet is aware of itself, has intelligence and is prone to extreme solutions. Hell the planet blasted a meteor out of space. Ascians creations are made of ether, could be the exact same problem as ff7, the planet not liking how its inhabitants use its life energy as fuel.

Ascians were altering reality itself, I can see the planet seeing this as unnatural and thus decided to erradicate the problem.

Makes even more sense because of Zodiark. He did not "stop" the sound, he altered the rules of physics for the whole star, perharps turning the ascians work into the normal state of the planet instead of what was there originally.

Using FFXIV concepts, the sound could be the planet itself using ether creation. Which would require both Willpower and Ether control.

Since the expansion explained that Astral is statis and Umbral is chaos(I think? I forget exactly what was said), and the Ascians are often despicted with Umbral-tones (purple/black), I just assumed they finally had performed enough chaos magic that the whole star was feeling the effects. Then everything turned to, well, chaos.

I've been slowly coalescing a theory that both Hydaelyn and Zodiark actually predate their own Summoning - that what the Ancients unknowingly did was give FORM to a "Will of the Planet" that already existed. If this were the case, then Hydaelyn's comments (by way of the Word of the Mother) that she and Zo predate life makes a little more sense. She also noted that Zodiark "coveted power"; perhaps he coveted that power as a kind of self-defense, in order to stop the Ancients from harming the planet with their Creation magic. He used the Sound to agitate them, and took advantage of their great Summoning in order to gain an active form. (If that's the case, though, it's quite a gambit; it's unclear how he could imagine that one would have lead to the other!)

Hydaelyn's later summoning gave similar agency to the part of the Will of the Planet that was left behind.

Other way around, I'm afraid! While it doesn't make much sense given the in-real-life meanings for Umbral (shaded) and Astral (starlike), in-game Astral = Darkness = Active = Chaos, while Umbral = Light = Stasis = Order.

Aside from that, what you say makes sense, just swap Astral for Umbral. :P
