Question Living in NA, but playing on EU DC, I noticed performance is the same?

So, I live in North America on the east coast, and I'm on Aether (Faerie to be exact). I have a lot of friends I've made in Europe, so I decided to make an alt to play on Light/Zodiark. At first, I was apprehensive because I thought that the performance of the game would suffer with me being in NA and on a EU data center, but I am shocked to find it actually plays just as smooth.

Is this normal? I would have thought being in NA I would suffer from dips and lag in performance, but I've experienced absolutely none. It's nice because it has opened my game experience to a whole new group of people.

I can only assume, since I am on the East coast, the distance between the NA and EU data centers from me are roughly the same, since I believe the DC in NA is in California.

The only thing you probably notice will be the absence of being able to double-weave oGCDs between actions, a noticeable delay in inputs that requires klicking on and the 100% most likely getting hit by near misses, even when you stepped out of the AoE a split second before.

Latency have an effect but I don’t know how bad your latency or how good you will starting to feel the difference

I use to play on Aegis when I was living in JP, then move to England still playing in same DC, I could feel the delay, it is especially obvious when fight that have tight AOE time and on ninja(back then you can cast ninjutsu as fast as your internet allowed). Once I move to EU DC, the delay have significant improve

The ping from the East Coast to the NA servers in San Franscisco is the same as from the East Coast to the EU depending on where in the East Coast you live.

It's actually not that bad at all. I've played from EU on NA centre a number of times and the game is playable just fine, of course occasionally there is packet loss which results in a weave not going off as intended but most of them go out just fine. It's definitely not a big deal for heavy ping jobs like MCH/NIN at least from my experience.

On a side note I heard land cables in NA are not the great in some areas, so often it can feel like connecting to EU from the east coast is more reliable to some degree.

Yeah this is what I assumed. So far nothing too wonky. I am not a hardcore raider or into Savage content, so as long as I don't have noticeable lag and can play decent I am happy.

One of our static healers is from the US but started their character on Odin (EU datacenter) back when the Eu-servers were back in 'murica and it didnt matter. They've been raiding through all expansions so far and while there are som lag-issues at times they arent to bad, so I wouldnt say that thats unsual.

I’ve played from the east coast since ARR, an’ it’s pretty abysmal after the move. Tryin’ ta melee a movin’ target is impossible. Overpower, a targeted skill mind ya, will somehow fail to hit the target selected if it moves out at just the right time, like if I’m chasin’ it. Just this mornin’ I got a good screenie o’ me usin’ an AoE on some mobs I’m chasin’ an’ hittin one behind me. On the plus side, I get almost a full 1/2 sec for slidecastin’, I suppose...
