blue mage spells question

so went into haukke manor to obtain Level 5 petrify..theres a mob at the top of the steps that casts and there is the same mob that is apart of the boss fight that casts it.

off both sentrys i had seen it go off more than a few time but never attained it..is it possible that theres a chance you just dont learn a few spells the first or second time you see it?

does this happen alot for other spells? because it seems everything else so far came pretty easy.

Different abilities have different "drop rates". Essential stuff like Glower (needed for BLU story progression) are guaranteed, while other skills vary between each other.

You never kill the one at the top of the stairs so I doubt that works. Basically you just fight the boss, kill the add after it uses it, and if you don't learn, reset the boss. Just final sting one of the other adds.

Yeah to add a bit of “fun” they decided to not only make many abilities dungeon mob only, but also learned at a low RNG rate. Yay BLU -_-

The original sentry outside the boss room never dies, so you can't learn anything from him. You must learn it from the sentry add during the last boss fight, and the learning check happens when the sentry dies--not the boss. So you should do this:

1. Engage boss.
2. Advance the fight to the point that the Sentry add pops.
3. Stop attacking boss, get Sentry below 50% but don't kill it.
4. Wait for Sentry to use Lv5 Petrify.
5. Kill Sentry.
6. Learned? Kill Boss. Not learned? Self-destruct/FinalSting/Die without killing boss, then restart the fight.

Just one more thing to add. The RNG check to determine whether a skill is learned or not occurs just once for the whole party. If there are multiple blue mages in your group trying to learn a skill, either everybody will learn it or nobody will learn it.
