Moving from PC launcher to Steam version and have a question about uninstalling

so ive had the steam version the entire time, but preferred the PC Launcher, doesnt display that im playing it, dont have to have a third party launcher running to run it, etc, but, its being forced at this point so whatever, trying to get it done before the last minute, space is limited so dont want the original install to be left there

when i go to uninstall it, im told if i uninstall ill lose my mail, address book, and all saved messages, is this just a default message if its the ONLY instance of final installed? will i lose anything else like gearsets, hotbars, hud, macros? im holding off on it at this point because i dont wanna go through the headache until i truly need the space

    thanks in advance

I have the steam version also, and I wouldn't do anything at this time. My understanding is this will just removes the need for a second login/password into the ffxiv launcher. FFXIV will just launch directly from steam like just cause or any other game.

    They've not said that.

All they have said is that Steam users will need to start the game from Steam. They've also said non-Steam will be unaffected if they launch the game from Steam so it sounds like it'll be exactly the same double login as it is now. Unfortunately we'll find out in 2 weeks

personally i feel its just added hassle for no reason at all, if you look on the launcher on the 31st it cites "fraud prevention" as the reasoning behind this, but last i checked, no matter what platform you get the game on, you have to buy the game, you have to pay a monthly/tri-monthly/bi-yearly/yearly sub through mogstation, not steam (if you paid through steam for sub, id maaaybe see the logic here, but you dont), and if i recall correctly if someone has a ps4 acct, as long as they buy the game on pc, they will still be able to log into their ps4 acct on pc? could be wrong but i think i remember hearing about this happening, and if so why cant steam users just keep their login through the launcher..

but to get back on track, should i just keep the 30gbs on for now an wait 2 or so weeks to see what happens then? i dont know if its just an auto msg acting as if its the only installation of final or if itd actually remove mail, etc, the steam version atm has my mail, linkshells an everything but dunno if thats just because i havent uninstalled the pc launcher yet

So, you can save the installation by doing this.

    1. Install the Launcher from Steam
    2. Go to your FF XIV installation folder (The full one) and make a copy of a file called "gameversion", move it to your desktop if you want or leave it there.
    3. Cut everything from the folder and paste it to the Steam's installation folder. (You can open it by right-clicking on FF XIV at the Steam library, properties, local game files and open location or going to the Steam's installation folder, steamapps, common, Final Fantasy XIV Online)
    4. Paste, it'll ask you if you want to replace a few files, say no.
    5. Take the file we copied, gameversion, and overwrite the Steam folder's one.
    6. Open up your launcher, voila.

Its a bit tedious if you're a bit slow with things like this, but you don't have to reinstall whatsoever. I think HUD stuff and other info is in "My Documents" folder inside the My Games > Final Fantasy XIV, don't quote me on that.

Will we be able to continue to launch a PC version of this game with Steam after this update? Currently we can play non steam games using their software.

You don't loose your mail or anything, the things you will loose are your layout, however you can copy this.

    In the following location > C:\Users\(your name)\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn
You can copy this entire FF XIV folder or just the folder with a name like "FFXIV_CHR0040002E92C0C8B2". You have a folder that looks like this for every character you have created. You can just copy this folder or the entire main folder it doesn't matter much.
Once you install the game again just copy this folder in the same location, launch the game and your layout will still be the same as the old one.

I always keep a copy of this folder in my cloud storage just in case my SSD goes bad and I need to install the OS and/or my game again I always have my layout ready.

I'm not sure what you mean with address book but I'm going to assume the friend list, this doesn't disappear, saved messages won't disappear either. What will disappear (though only temporarily) is the name of your friends on other worlds, however, you can just click the online symbol next to the (unable to retrieve) and their name along with their online or offline status will appear right away.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

No, you'll only be able to launch the game trough Steam (which will launch it trough their verification servers first). There is currently no way to do this manually and I doubt there will ever be a way.

I'm running a PC (non Steam) version of FF now using the Steam launcher. There is the option to run other non Steam games as well. So you're saying this update will affect that ability or will that apply just to Final Fantasy XIV Steam owners?

I hope this is the case. I guess we'll find out as you say in a couple weeks.

    Apologies I misread that.

As of right now Valve has not stated any change in the ability to add .exe's to run as 'non steam game'. So, you will still be able to run the non Steam version trough Steam.
