    Shadowbringers Trailer

Question, if you watch the Shadowbringers trailer, there's the part where the hood flies off of Y'shtola. She says, Until our friend returns, I will hold the line. Who is "Our Friend" that Y'shotola is referring to? It can't be us, because, we are not returning?

After playing through the ShB MSQ I'm pretty sure the trailer actually shows what happens in the First while we are still back in Eorzea - failing to heading the call of the Exarch. It is mentioned as well in Rak'tikka that Y'shtola apparead after an attacked threatened the people so I would think that this is the time the trailer catches.

Therefor she probably means us in a way that she waits until we get called to the First as the Exarch is still trying. I could be wrong though. I'm not too deep digged into the lore and someone may correct me.

I assumed she meant the WoL. That whole scene isn't exactly cannon I don't think. Because it shows her on the tower in that burned out town in Rak'tika with Urianger and I don't think he was even there at the time. So I'm thinking they took some liberties.

Might want to pop a possible spoilers note in your title. Sadly I don't know how to hide my text in that drop down thingie

The scene of the forest burning and Thancred rescuing the girl are canon. Keep in mind that Thancred had been in the world for 5 First years and Y'shtola had been there for 3 First Years.

Good point, I assumed Urianger wasn't there when it burned but he may have been and may have told the WoL, but honestly unless the twins are telling me something I don't pay him any mind.

The whole trailer is "misleading" in that every scene we see play out (except maybe Thancred and Minfilia) has elements that don't represent what really happened, or made us assume details that weren't accurate.

The scene in the burning forest clearly somewhat happened, because the burned fort is there, and Y'shtola would have been in Rak'tika at the time. Urianger striding in making dramatic speeches about fate? Probably not, unless he's that oblivious about the appropriate time to discuss things.

So, if that's not exactly how it happened, then I wouldn't take the details of their conversation as canon either. Or as Jojoya said, they might have been canon at the time the scene was written, but the story got altered after that.

(That scene also had the setup for calling her "Master Matoya" and sending us into unnecessary theory meltdown for months. I would not be surprised if the entire "Night's Blessed don't use their real names" thing was written just so they could get that line in the trailer.)

Don't tune him out. He has a lot of important dialogue.

Imo the entire "Master Matoya" bit in the story was completely and utterly unnecessary. It had absolutely no plot relevance at all. Including it in the trailer did nothing but generate a bunch of wild theories that turned out inaccurate. I also think its rather stupid, too. For one, let's buy this idea and say none of the members of the Night's Blessed used their real names. Of all the names Y'Shotla could've chosen, why did it have to be that one, the same as her Master's? Also, why was Urianger calling her 'Master Matoya" in the trailer? I would get it if one of the Night's Members called her that, neither he nor anyone else one calls her that after we leave the Greatwood

Assumed it was us. Te trailers seems to be showing what is happening while we are on the Source still. Thancred stealing away Minfillia for example. It looks like the first settlement you come to in Rak'tika so I guess when we arrive that happened a few years previously.

Keep in mind cinematics are planned far in advance (YoshiP had mentioned during the last Live Letter the cinematic was planned out just after Stormblood's launch but before Shadowbringer's story arc was finalized). I'm fairly certain it was still a reference to the Warrior of Light and not someone else. It could be originally the story had the Warrior of Light meeting with her before the attack but the story was altered after work on the cinematic was already begun and it was too late to change the details.

Might be mildly immersion breaking now that the story can be experienced but it's not a big deal.
