This is precisely one kind of "training wheel" (to use a term from another thread) that could help ensure you unlock your job and keep it.

if you happen to have a retainer that isn't a job you can equip that gear on them if they are still ACN/THM/etc.

If they want to give out free upgrades im game. otherwise the cost can be prohibitive depending on the person. Class job upgrades are part of the story. If they want to make retainer upgrades the same, that's cool.

As a matter of fact, it's about time that this actually became a reality. A quest line to unlock retainer jobs sounds fun to me and an easy way to get retainers upgraded so they match the class paradigm.
