What we need is more opportunities to disagree. Seems like we're always agreeing with what's said (even when we know we shouldn't) as if we can't think for ourselves. It's extremely rare for one of the NPC to say "let's do this" and the WoL gets to go "no, it needs to be done differently".

also I actually find NPCs making fun of our constant nodding pretty insulting, considering we have no say in acting that way 90% of the time.

Outside of the Sims, no game really lets you do everything you want so the story can be written with a specific identity in mind. Everything outside of that is your call. Back when I tried miqo'te, I preferred to imagine when something's being explained, they were just singing nyannyannyannyan.*clenches fist*

there is a difference between leaving someone a blank slate for the player imagination, and the WoL being written as a complete doormatOutside of the Sims, no game really lets you do everything you want so the story can be written with a specific identity in mind.
